How noisey is the fan on your X201?

#1 Post by kennyschiff » Mon Dec 13, 2010 3:06 pm

I'm considering replacing my X61 with an X201. Love the X61, but like my earlier T43, the fan is really loud (I have used fan control software). I replaced the fan on the X61, but still not exactly quiet. Curious as to whether the X201 will be better.

My wife's X201 is almost silent and a lot quieter than her old T43p with TI grahics where the fan whizzed away all the time.

My X200 was pretty quiet when it was run in low power mode, but could get noisy above it. I find the LV CPU in my tablet is quieter at higher power levels. Perhaps you want to look at something like the X200s with a LV or ULV CPU unless you're coding blu-rays all day. There's a bunch of them in the outlet right now. If you've got cash to burn and want above WXGA, then perhaps the X201s is worth consideration.

Though when taxed the fan can get a little loud on my X200 its nothing compared to what my T43 was. I think loud is the wrong word though, it's just noticible at higher RPM's, its still quieter than... oh a 13" MBP for instance.

This is about fans on X201 machines not X200 machines. :?

As far as I know the only differences in design between the two is the palmrest can be cut out for ultranav and they now harbor Core i series chipsets. I doubt Lenovo did anything to the fan design. The X201's I've used have sounded identical to my X200 as well for what its worth.

I have used a X201 for two weeks and it hardly comes on with the i5 CPU, unless you have multiple flash or movies open (haven't tried it with games), it is lot better than the X61s or X61 with T7xxx CPU.

I've had mine a week never heard it even come on. Have only used for web/office/music and films but has never even made the slightest noise, a massive improvement over my last notebook.
