X300 SSD : has anyone replaced it for a HDD?

#1 Post by miscthree » Mon Dec 20, 2010 10:36 pm

I have been using an X300 which has the original 64GB samsung SSD.

I like the performance of the drive but I don't want to have to carry around an external drive when I need more space...which is why I am considering a larger HDD.

I can opt for an 160 gb OCX or equivalent SSD but was wondering how the x300 performance is overall with a 5400 rpm HDD?

I've researched it a bit but couldn't find any definitive info other than the vague 'you'll take a performance hit'..

Thoughts?

You are going to take a huge performance hit. Watch the videos on youtube of ssd vs. hdd boot comparisons.

Even more so when we're talking about a 5400rpm disk...

What specific HDD model do you have in mind? How much cheaper it would be than an SSD with the same capacity?
It seems to me there are not that many 1.8" (non SSD) hard drives available nowadays, probably because they can't really compete with SSD's, not even on price.
