Typing on X200/X201 (and tablet)

#1 Post by vinuneuro » Sat Feb 05, 2011 6:41 pm

The tablets are starting to become more appealing to me because of potentially easier and more organized note taking, and good screens by Thinkpad standards. My main concern looking at pictures of 16:10 X-series models is the short palmrest. With my T400 I rest my wrist close to the edge. If my move my hands to even .5in in it becomes difficult to type the second from lowest row (Z-M). The X200/201 look like they're shorter by more than .5in. Is this something you get used to or is it better to pass on this line for someone who also does a fair amount of typing?

Fwiw, my hands is ~7.5in long (from end of middle finger to base of the hand).

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could post the depth of the X200/X201 palmrest from the keyboard to where it falls off.

In my experience, where I rest my palms depends on the available space, but relative to the keys, my hands are in the same place, wether I am typing on a netbook or a desktop... you will probably just adjust to the availible room. (sliding your hand up or down on your current computer is not an accurate representation, IMHO). You should probably try on a couple of diffrent computer sizes (smaller and larger) at a store, not for keyboard feel or quality but for palmrest feel. (one thing to remember is that the shape of the palmrest matters (especially the edge) - for example, I cannot type on a macbok pro since my wrists rest on the sharp edge and it gets painfull after a while). I believe that the x20x probably has a very ergonomic shape, and would not give any issues (not having used those exact models, I am not sure, but speaking as someone with big (8.5") hands, I find that I adjust fairly easily to diffrent keyboard types and sizes.

That's a good point about the palmrest shape, I hadn't though of that. The non-tablets look like they fall off gradually like this T400, but the tablets seem to have a rather sharp edge. :( I'll go try out some smaller notebooks in the store anyhow.

I believe and I've owned them both, but the tablet palm rest is a bit larger, though I could be just imagining it. I thought both keyboards were excellent, but I'm not really a speed typist.

That looks like my dell did. The thing is that even though it is a sharp corner, it is rounded so that it does not cut in (think mac) When you try diffrent models, try to find one that looks like it has the closest palmrest (possibly an HP tablet)
