#1 Post by Loafers » Wed Mar 02, 2011 10:25 pm

just bought a new x201. every few seconds i hear a very faint clicking sound. i've had other laptops in the past that made lots of noise so maybe this is normal?

welcome to the forum!

mute your sound and see if the clicking continues.   there could be a background process of windows explorer making the click.

Hi thanks for the reply.

I'm running Debian Squeeze and I have my sound blacklisted. It's definitely the hardware making the sound. I know most laptops in general make random sounds that are very minor. Although mine is pretty much no exception, in extremely quiet areas the "click" sounds are noticeable. The odd thing is, I can predict when it's going to make make the click sound.

Personally, I'm surprised i didn't notice the sound last week. Maybe because it was during day when there were lots of ambient sounds.

Oh and "click noise" might be inaccurate. Maybe "faint peculiar hardware noise" would be a better description.

Maybe I'm just being too picky/anal...

EDIT: Ok so maybe I'm not insane after all. I found this on the wiki: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... e_clicking The sounds are also coming from the driver area, so I guess this must be it. Hurray, problem discovered!

EDIT #2: Problem fixed! (For now that is...)

The link you showed indicates a Hitachi Travelstar 5K80, 5K100, or Samsung MP0804H drive -- i.e., 5400RPM. If that is what you have, then do yourself a BIG favor and replace that with at least a 7200RPM drive, if not an SSD. Given the low cost of fast drives (see below), it makes little sense, if any, to place a 5400RPM drive in an X201:

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I have a western digital scropio blue thingy. I considered getting a 7200 when i first bought my laptop, but was worried it might consume more power than a 5400. But yeah, 7200 is pretty affordable.
