x220 harddisk format?

Hi,

I just noticed that Z7K320 is listed as a HDD. This drive is a 2.5 inch hdd with 7mm hight.
Does anyone know, whether the hdd is limited to 7mm ( normal notebook hdds are 9,5mm).

This is not a dealbraker, ad definetively better than 1.8 inch, but it limits choice and the biggest size available a little.

cheers

ralf

But still regular 2.5" 9.5mm HDDs will be twice the capacity of the largest 7mm, because 7mm comes with a single platter and 9.5mm comes with a two platters. So, when Hitachi will finally release its 500GB Z5K500, there will be 1TB 9.5mm HDDs (current 1TB are 12.5mm high); when some 1TB 7mm hard drive will be released, users of other laptops will enjoy their 2TB HDDs etc... i wonder why lenovo did this, from photos it seems like there is enough place for extra 2mm between hdd door and the keyboard, and i doubt there is some circuitry in this gap.

//dream mode on//
maybe they reserve the space for this new smaller new ssd standart as boot drive, and the hdd is just the big data dump
//dream mode off//

still this is a way better option than the 1.8 inch disk were...

And size kann be limiting. My t41 will be replaced because there are no biger than 320gb disk available inch 2.5 Pata... (I know about the ultrabay...

The x220 series can use a mini pci ssd. So you can have two hdds in the x220:

1. sata hdd
2. mini pci ssd

You have to decide whether you want to use the mini cpi ssd or the mini pci wwan. You can u se the mini pci ssd as your only hdd, you can boot from it.

Mini-Pci in my view would be the best way to go (can fit TWO HD in one slot)
and would be lots safer .............considering the failure rate of SSDs

>> from the X220 DEMO MODEL we got to see ad touch ,,,, it had to have the minipci >>as the bootup was super fast . >>> NOPE WE werent allowed to look under the hood>>> and the AC MGR wouldnt even let it out off his sight !!!!

I for one was VERY MUCH lookign forward to the HDMI slot , as rest of things which are there - seems TOP CLASS.

As a OVER_ALL / General Observations = its looked like Thinkpad EDGE model , reduced to X201 size and on STERIODS ! > SO tops marks for Lenovo on getting the HARDWARE soted out ,,,,,,,, but not sure I would b running WINDOWS on it ,,,,, so DISPLAY is kinda mute point for me (( Msot of our work laptops are LINUX + Windows x64) and winx64 = jsut there for "demo" etc etc

Cany waite to get my hands on X220 + Clip on Battery = for my TRANS PACIFIC /ATLANTIC flights !!!

They already did that. However, i doubt thin HDD will help with the placement of SSD, because SSD is connected to mSATA/PCI-E slot on the motherboard and thus lies on the same plane as motherboard, that is, on the bottom of the chassis. Independently of where exactly it is located, it certainly is not located in that gap between HDD and keyboard.
Well, i guess, we will see it when HMM for X220 appears.

Only in terms of price.
2.5" platters are roughly twice the capacity of 1.8" platters (and 3.5" are twice the capacity of 2.5" platters) of the same generation. That means that single-platter (7mm thick) 2.5" HDDs are roughly of the same capacity as dual-platter (8mm thick) 1.8" HDDs, while providing less possibilities to manufacturers (these are only 1mm thinner, but take a lot more space on the plane).
Also, there are two manufacturers who sell 1.8" HDD (Toshiba and Samsung); and i believe only Hitachi makes 7mm 2.5" HDDs, which, coupled with a recent news about Hitachi acquisition by WD, may mean that we won't see new 7mm models for a long time. By the way, 500GB 7mm Hitachi Z5K500 was announced in the middle of December as "Shipping", but actually it is still not on sale.

So is 7mm drives only confirmed? Intel X25-M is 7mm :)

It's not confirmed but so far we haven't seen anything suggesting that it's not the case.

Has the thickness of the base been reduced? That would suggest it.

The main two factors are the lack of 9.5mm options in the specs and low hdd cover on the right side as seen on the pictures (compare with X200/201).

i can confirm that the X220 uses 7mm high drives.

Any idea why? Have they put something between the drive and the keyboard?

Can't wait to have a look at X220 HMM and service videos at lenovoservicetraining.com. I want to know what's inside this thing already!

i wish i knew.   i definitely would have preferred 9.5mm drive height.

A 7mm max drive height is pretty much a dealbreaker for me. Guess I'll be skipping this X generation if that's the case.

Just to refresh topic
I can confirm that this laptop is using thinner drive and standart 9.5mm will not fit.

I've actually been reconsidering this. Maybe I'll just plan on using an eSATA drive for extra storage.
Really irritates me that they went to 7mm though when HP can fit a 9.5mm HDD AND an optical drive in the same form factor (Elitebook 2560p/2570p). Unfortunately the 2570p seems to be quite a bit more expensive and has no IPS option.

X220 uses 7mm.

You can fit a 9mm drive into it by not using the drive caddy. That's going to be a little wobbly, but stuffing some papers or whatever in the gap can stabilize it. However, I can only recommend this for a 9mm SSD drive, as you would want 0 movement for traditional hard drive.
