x200 Tablet - nonfunctional Multitouch screen

#1 Post by anachronism » Sat Mar 12, 2011 3:19 pm

I purchased a laptop off ebay recently that was supposed to come with the 285nit Anti-glare screen but instead received a multitouch display. The display is the 270nit newer MT version according to a cross reference between pcwizard (Toshiba IPS Model# LTD121KX6B) & http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/lenovo- ... ource.html

I've tried reinstalling drivers several times with several methods, but I can't install drivers via the thinkvantage update system since the motherboard type has been wiped off the bios info along with serial number. The bios/flash updater will not allow me to input a model number to flash with. However, I'm guessing there's a problem on the hardware end.

I've cross referenced the motherboard models via the lenovo TAbook and every single 270nit multitouch model has a motherboard with a 2.13 ghz cpu (60Y3894), so I'm curious if anyone has seen multitouch functioning on a motherboard of a different model. Furthermore, there may also be several other points where hardware may be missing/not connected/incorrect - MT cable assembly (60Y4717) , micro processor card (45M2827).

I plan to open the laptop up to find out whats inside, but I'm wondering if anyone has upgraded a 1.83ghz cpu motherboard (60Y3879) to a 270nit MT screen before? I still plan on trying to secure a 285nit anti-glare model as multitouch isn't useful to me.

On a side note, I like the frameless display and the thick glass cover despite its glossiness (? guess it's direct bond model?) separating the tablet pen from the display surface. It's too bad the MT layer affects the brightness viewing angles so dramatically.

Are you sure that you have the Multitouch model? Seems to me that it is the standard screen. I was under the impression that all frameless screens (with the thick glass) were non-multitouch/digitizer only on the X200t (as stated on your link). It is an easy way to tell which screen you got.

That's a good point and perspective I hadn't looked at before; wish I had viewed it that way earlier. However, now I'm stuck with contradicting information since the LTD121KX6B part is listed as a MT display, yet now I know MT displays don't have the frameless display. I'm guessing it's definitely not MT now, though.

Regarding the 285nit anti-glare (matte) display, since the frameless, glass display (glossy) causes reflections to occur, wouldn't having the anti-glare screen sitting under a glossy glass screen end up negating the anti-matte function? Is there any way to simply swap out the frameless display (to eliminate the glossy portion) for a non-frameless while keeping the lcd panel? I really want to eliminate the glossy effect. [edit: If I can't avoid gloss, I will probably try to find an outdoor display.] [edit #2- this post seems to answer the first half of my questions http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/lenovo- ... post136175 (poster links to photos of his 285nit anti-glare model showing the exact same reflections I run into]

it sounds like you received exactly what you purchased.

consider that the problem could be that you're assuming that the linked "definitive resource" is 100% correct.   it isn't.   i've already sent two corrections to the author of that thread and have found a few more since.

what lenovogringo is correct.   if what you have is frameless then it's pen-only.   frameless touch input models weren't introduced until the X220T.

the X200T/X201T frameless panels are polycarbonate and adhered to the plastic bezel underneath.   there's no easy way to swap panels with the framed outdoor-viewable version.   you'd be better off buying a different LCD assembly or a different X200T altogether.   the frame can make writing/drawing a challenge, creating a big drawback to the outdoor and multitouch panels for those who actually use their tablets as tablets.   the X220T design addresses this shortcoming.

fwiw, i highly dislike glossy panels but never once found my former frameless X200T offensive in any way.   if i were you i'd learn to live with what you have.   the toshiba panels are rather nice plus the frameless design can't be beat.

Thanks for the informative replies. I found a youtube video that demonstrates the outdoor glossy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qITveJXxPQE appearance in contrast to a t4xx anti-glare display. The glossy aspect of the outdoor is a lot stronger compared to what I've seen from my own display outdoors, so I believe that this is as good as it gets for the time being.

the outdoor panels are absolute fingerprint magnets.   the frameless panels are much easier to keep clean.

the frameless panels are awesome.   i wouldn't want an X200T/X201T any other way.

the upcoming X220T uses glass and will be much like a cell phone in how it fingerprints.   the frameless X200T/X201T panels may prove to be the best at resisting fingerprints we'll ever see.

that's my guess anyway. :)
