I'm using MikTeX, and with TeXWorks default previewer you can see the whole page on 1280*800 (although fonts are quite small):

It's been a while since I used GhostScript/GSView. Can they really not scale the page to the size of the screen, like most document processing / viewing utilities can (e.g., Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word)?

Dunno about GSView, but Evince, etc. definitely can.

Thanks for the feedback.
To penartur: I use Miktex, and emacs/auctex for editing. I never tried TexWorks (or to be more exact, I did try many LaTeX editors, only coming to conclusion that though, emacs/auctex has less bells and whistles than other tools, as far as context-sensitive editing is concerned, e.g., syntax highlighting, nothing can be auctex). Now as I understand, TexWorks is probably kind of DVI pre-viewer (I'll take a look at it). The problem is that I use lots of pstricks tools, and that generates lots of embedded postscript code right inside dvi. So all dvi previewer, when encounter such a file either can't display embedded postscript, or have to do the same job a postscript viewer does, but they do it very slow, since, after all, displaying postscript from dvi viewer is not what they were designed for in a first place. So, because of pstricks, my workflow is (generate dvi from tex and then generate ps from dvi and then view with ghostview/ghostscript. The extra step to generate ps from dvi is just extra click and takes place almost instantly, with a standard dvips tool). But thanks for the tip, I'll take another look at TexWorks. Spasibo, tovarishch!
As to evans, it's GNOME tool, I'm not sure if you can actually run GNOME under windows. Looks like very nice utility, though.
Regarding ghostview/ghostscript under windows, it definitely shows its age (e.g., does not recognize the fact that the tool bar under vista is hidden), but in terms of speed and quality of displaying postscript files, no other window-based postscript viewer can bit it. (I did check all other offers, which are not free, by the way, ghostview is free, but that's only a minor consideration for me. It's not like I'm not willing to pay, it is that there's nothing available that has at least the same quality as ghostview.
Anyway, I still hope that at some point there will be some kind of small thinkpad with 900 vertical pixels. A bit smaller and lighter than T420s.

Not DVI but PDF one (PDFs are compiled straight from TeX using pdfLatex). I don't know how PDF deals with postscript code unfortunately.
I also used a combination of Tex editor + manual compilation to dvi + dvi previewing + dvips once, but it seems that pdfLatex offers much easier way to publish your files (unless you need ps).

Actually, everybody needs a display with more than 1000px in height, they just don't know it !
there were display with 16??x1050 back in the day....

Why stop at that? At least 1200! Unfortunately in the realm of 16:9 with 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 being all but obsolete, this forces one to go to 2560x1440! Now that is something I would love to have in my X220.

It is still too low, we need at least 2000 so that it would match in DPI with my keitai. This is just stupid lenovo wants to save another penny by refusing from 3840*2160 screens.

It certainly doesn't look like i did get the 1600*900.
This is just some user from China noticed that drivers for X220 display have the lines describing 1600*900 screens, which
may mean, that Lenovo
may sometime offer such an option.

crashnburn is likely referring to what's in your signature: " X220 IPS 1600*900 "
a note stating that such an upgrade path doesn't exist might help solve any confusion.

It was the signature that did it

Dammn you..

lol! Such dreams & fantasies.
BTW - Besides the Sony Vaio Z Series which has 1920 x 1080/1200 on a 13" platform are there any other 'mini' machines with High Resolutions? Or any LCDs / LED screens on the market that could be swapped into a Little Thinkpad.
Or does the market not exist at all?
I am hoping that Apple iPad goes the 'Retina' display way like the iPhone 4 (just migrated to one.. lovely lovely screen). For the iPad size to go Retina would mean a good high res..? Right?
Once they hit the market, everyone on the market will go High Rest on smaller devices. Lets pray for that

I sure hope the history will repeat itself and we will see aftermarket upgrades to the X220 LCD as we did in X200. If the screen was of decent quality and had a higher resolution, it would make me upgrade from X200/AFFS.
I will be watching closely...

The market is extremely small. I am a huge fan of high-res screens but 13" 1920x1080 is way too high DPI even for me. For 13", 1600x900 is good enough for 16:9, though 1680x1050 would be perfect.

I just got the iPhone 4.. and man I love the high res Retina display. I bet we could run things at lower density, but having a full res retina display when one could increase 'sizes' of UI components is still better off.

Phones are different from laptops, because we hold the phone only about a foot from the eyes.

Well, then you probably hold your phone even closer. The point I was trying to make was, we view phones closer than we view laptop screens, whereas for desktop monitors, we view them at an even greater distance. That's why phones tend to have the highest DPI, laptops lower, and desktop monitors even lower.

Changing that to "praying for" or "wishing for" would be more appropriate. With "waiting for", some people might think you have already ordered it and are waiting for its arrival.

Has there been any updates on this topic?
The X220 Tablet's resolution is indeed far too small; and this is pretty much the only drawback with the machine, so it's an enormoush shame for it.
768px screen height is not enough for any technology work, and not even enough for working with Office if you think about.
In absence of current availability from the manufacturer, modding the laptop would be a worthy option to consider. Though, are there any HD+ (1600*900) or FHD (1920*1080) or alike 12.5" modules anywhere on the market? Are any upcoming - what do you say?
Take the Sony Z FHD module B131HW02 would be sth indeed (sacrificing IPS for resolution is clearly worth it for me), but there's no way to squeeze it in without breaking it, is there - or would sandpapering down that module carefully by machine, or alike, deliver?
Anyone aware of the mm dimensions of the X220T bundled and that of the Sony Z/B131HW02?
Best regards

I doubt if it would fit the 12" machines? I am wondering if it could work on a 13" X30x series?

Wouldn't a 1600x900 panel on a 12.5" screen be hard to read? Although you lose some vertical space with the 1366x768 resolution, I think a higher resolution for a small screen would be bit of overkill. Regardless, having options is great.
On a side note, I love my first ThinkPad so much that I am currently researching another ThinkPad purchase. Most likely, I will get a T420 (or whatever the equivalent is next year) and a dock for my wife.

Only if you use an old OS that doesn't support resolution independence.

Indeed the B131HW02 is a 13.1" module. The X30x series are out of production, and, I want this in a convertible tablet. (I use it in a setting where ability to flip the screen over is vital.)

Even full-HD 1920*1080 would clearly be worth it on the X220T.
With either of
* a resolution independent OS,
* sharp eyes or/and
* good glasses,
it's more than worth it.
Basically a >= ~1400*1024 res is needed to have more than one word processor / web browser / terminal window open simultaneously.
Also, photos remain heavily grained at sub-WXGA+ resolutions, so the laptop is not suitable for watching or editing photos.
So the point with this kind of resolution is to have a computer setup good to work with while on the go, for tasks that are not completely trivial.. which is exactly why you get an X220T.
So there's some bugs somewhere in the link laptop user - manufacturer - display manufacturer.
This would be more than worth it to give as feedback to Lenovo directly. I sought kind of everywhere for someone to contact directly there, are you aware of anyone who could have a contact?
Best regards

I'd keenly get a used X30x or so if it could hold a higher resolution LCD. Esp one thats Full HD 1920 x 1080.
Any thoughts from guys who've had/ handled X30x.. ? And the super modders.. like Erik?
