A new Macbook Air killer:

Lenovo X1
i3 and i5 CPU
13" screen (1366x768)
build in battery (30 min for 80% recharge)
back-light keyboard
1 x USB3
2x USB2 (one powered USB)
HDMI and Mini DP output

and 1.7 kg !!!

Looks good except screen resolution and weight

PS: I doubt that lenovo will release the laptop with such specs, with the only differences vs. X220 being slightly larger screen (13" vs. 12.5", advantage), built-in battery (disadvantage), backlit keyboard (=low water resistance, disadvantage) and weight (heavier, disadvantage). When compared to T420s, such "X1" is worse in every aspect. Also, i don't see how it could be a MBA killer.

I received this information during Lenovo presentation about new models for 2011. I discussed during this presentation that in my opinion this model is without sense but Lenovo would like to have something like this in the portfolio. This model will be very thin - half the thickness of T420, the keyboard will be alike as in the model x100 and also the screen will be without the frame (something like iPad). Of course X1 will be without the CD drive.

Half the thickness of T420, chiclet keyboard, no optical drive, non-removable battery, 13" and still it weighs the same as T420s? Probably they put some bricks inside of it.
X301 was IIRC 1.3kg; that's with removable battery and optical drive. Making all this sacrifices you're saying about lenovo probably could shave it down to 1kg.

The thinness and weight remind me of the Dell Adamo, which is also extremely thin and too heavy.

Adamo 2 is also extremely weird, probably that extra weight is because of the construction.
Adamo 1 had a quite nice appearance though.

The lighter a notebook is, the thicker it has to be if the ruggedness should stay the same. You can see that on toughbooks which 12 inch notebooks are 1,3 kg (with 10+ hours). There are toughbooks with less than 0,9 kg! All are relatively thick as metals are heavy and you have to ruggetize them with plastics.

Hard to get excited about the spec as described. The weight seems too heavy for a macbook killer. May be it will be made from metal like ideapad u260 and not carbon fiber.

So let'd produce a 7 inch thinkpad slate weighing 5kg, and promote it as a macbook air killer! That to say, it could actually kill a macbook air, when thrown from an appropriate height.

May be X1 is a glorified derivative of X100 model, something like a larger footprint with a bigger 13" LCD. Near 4lb weight can be explained if X100/X120 is made larger into a 13" chasis.

May be Lenovo is trying to save few bucks through a engineering retread.

The specs seem really odd, since I was under the impression that the MBA killer would be coming from the Ideapad lineup. Oh, well I was kind of hoping for a robust slate/keyboard tablet (a tablet capable of work!).

Anyways, seems like you can preoder one for $4000 (or maybe $3000 USD if this is a New Zealand website)!

That would be the price if it is based on atom cpu. With Sandy Bridge the price should double or triple. I'm just suggesting that Lenovo is trying to save development and manufacturing costs by modifying the x100 platform.

Sorry to say that but I have to...

1) You can say everything about the MBA but you have to admit that design is great and I doubt that Lenovo will design something "looking good" as well
2) The Aluminium which been used , makes MBA looks very solid same Dell Adamo - Lenovo probably will not use Aluminium
3) In MBA there's NVidia GPU but I can bet you will not find dedicated GPU (NVidia or AMD) in the X1
4) What's the point putting HDMI and mini DP together?.. I know that HDMI send picture and audio but I've read few posts that DisplayPorts in latest ThinkPads like T410 can send audio as well..so Lenovo don't do that just decide to use DP with audio-sending posibility or HDMI only

Summary: X1 won't be MBA killer

it's called "DP++" and allows the same socket to be used for both DP and HDMI.

no one said there would be two sockets, just two types of output.

I think this model has lost the wind from its sails with the X220 being as good as it is.

I'm not sure if you know but EU Comision decided or will decide not to allow sell any electronic device with built-in battery
So that's another con of X1 concept

I don't really know why Lenovo decided to put out a product like this; didn't they learn anything from the X3xx lineup debacle? Almost everyone loved the X300 series (save the price and screen), but it didn't fill a niche that wasn't already taken and thus was a very disappointing seller. The 'new' X1 is heavier, less versatile and doesn't offer anything save being really thin. It even goes against Thinkpad traditions (No spill resistance keyboard? No removable battery? I wonder what else it sacrifices; Roll Cage?) All of this points to an Ideapad product (the OP only stated "Lenovo X1" not Thinkpad X1). Besides, one would think that if a new thin flagship Thinkpad were to be produced, it would be named "X320." Lenovo would save lots on retooling and development costs as well (the X3xx is already thin enough anyways). Again, I just don't know what the engineers were thinking.

IMHO, they should have incorporated some the of the 'thinning' advancements into a product that actually needs to be thin (ie X2xx tablets). If Lenovo put out a 0.5-0.9" convertible tablet, then it would be a total seller. I hate writing 1.25" off the desk, especially near the corners (16:9 makes this an even more common problem) and lugging around that thing isn't nearly as comfortable as some rivals (old thinner Dell XT1/2 for example). Tablets need to be thin and don't have to be powerful! Put out a product that is thin, lightweight, power efficient, cost effective, and students will jump right on the wagon. With that said, I hope that the X1 will be offered in a tablet formfactor (I know, I know, it's not going to happen).

In all seriousness though, I'm willing to bet that (relatively) cheap, superthin, convertible tablets will be the sellers in the future if Win 8 delivers on its promise on revamping tablet functionality.

EDIT: Here's a 2nd source on the X1. According to this, announcement is slated on the 17th of May.
