Which model numbers are there for the following X220 spec ?

#1 Post by Jason404 » Thu May 19, 2011 7:16 pm

First of all, what's the latest on the X220s situation? Does it look like there will not be one at all? What about a high resolution IPS screen option?

Now, which are the models which have the following:

IPS screen
4GB of RAM, with slots free for 8GB expansion.

Basically, that's it, but I cannot find any on the UK. The CPU and HDD size does not matter so much.

I would like the following options as well, but I can always retrofit these:

40GB mSATA SSD dual storage
WWAN/GPS card

Are there enough full height mini-PCIe slots to have both of these at the same time?

I'm not sure if I am forgetting any other options I may want. Am I?

Cheers.

an i5-2537M ULV option is on the books but this isn't likely to be dubbed an 's' model.

don't wait around for HD+ resolution as it's not on the radar at all.

regarding exactly which systems have IPS and a single 4GB module, you'll have to check with either lenovo UK or your local resellers.

the X220 can use either a WWAN card or an mSATA SSD but not both simultaneously.   there is only one mPCIe slot capable of using WWAN or mSATA.   the other slot is for half-height mPCIe wireless cards.

@erik
Thanks for the information. I think I may wait for that ULV version, if it is out soon. Hopefully it will be available with the IPS screen, which is a must for me, for using Adobe Lightroom. The battery life on the full speed models is fantastic enough.

But that thing about the WWAN and mSATA SSD not being able to be used at the same time is terrible news. Are you sure this is the case?

I'm pretty sure that my [STOLEN!] X200s had two full size slots, with one being used for the WWAN and the other for WLAN. There was a third, half-height slot, which was empty, and I didn't know what it could even be used for.

So do you mean that wifi cards are smaller now, and there is one less full sized slot in the new machines?

I might have to get a T420 instead, and I would hate to do that.

EDIT: Actually, I could just get a regular 2.5" SSD. I don't really need that much disk space, as I have all my files in a private cloud. It would have been nice to have dual storage though.

i'm 100% positive that WWAN and mSATA share the same slot.   wireless cards have since been made much smaller since your X200s and there's no longer an option to run full-length wireless cards like in the previous chassis.   since the WWAN/mSATA slot is the only 54mm slot in the X220, that's the only place to install that size card.

this site will give you a look inside the X220: http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/io ... index.html

my personal recommendation would be a 2.5" intel 320-series SSD.

regarding ULV, the i5-2537M won't have nearly the same performance as an i5-2520M in apps like photoshop or lightroom.   if you intend to work from the X220 most of the time rather than use it for simple business apps or checking email, a standard-voltage processor would be recommended.   i have an i5-2520M in mine and get 6+ hours on a 6-cell battery while playing in apps like photoshop, illustrator, inventor, and so on.   if battery life is your only reason for the ULV then i'd just get a standard processor.   plus, the chassis are all the same size so you can now have a full-power processor and a 4-cell battery at the same time without any extra bulges.
