X200 fan replacement

Has anyone done this before?
According to the HMM there are four FRU types for each processor type.
Code: Select all
FRU 45N4782 for NV, 25-watt
FRU 44C9550 for NV, 35-watt
FRU 45N3235 for LV
FRU 45N3236 for ULV
My X200 is a 2.4 GHz core2duo and I'm thinking it is a 25-watt processor.
The HMM says "fan assembly" which to my understanding would include the fan and copper heatsink assembly??? I don't think I need to change the copper heatsink assembly so I'm planning on ordering just the fan itself. Upon opening up my X200 I discovered that the fan is FRU 44C9549....which isn't even on the HMM?!
I've gone over to fleabay and noticed there is an affordable fan that is 44C9550. I'm thinking that even though the fan FRU is for the 35-watt that it should work fine with my 25-watt processor without adverse effects to my unit.
Any thoughts on this???

If you have a P8600 it is 25w. I have no idea about the fans themselves as far as different part numbers. If you can determine the manufacturer/model from both fan labels that might help to research it. I'd have to assume the fan voltage is the same, but be careful with 'size' and 'rotation speed'.

44C9549 was replaced by 44C9550 in the system. it should be the exact same fan.

But I think the real question is; What is the difference between 45N4782 and 44C9550, and can they be swapped? Maybe the fan parts are the same but the design or the copper content is heftier for the 35w heatsink.

the difference between the two designs (35W and 25W) is that 45C9550 has a discreet heat pipe for the GPU where 45N4782 uses the same heat pipe for both the GPU and CPU. the actual fans and heat louvers are identical. IMHO the 45C9550 is a better design and should potentially allow for lower fan speeds.
plus, i believe she has a 35W heatsink now (although i could be wrong). i'd recommend staying with the same thing than potentially downgrading.

@erik, thanks for the research.. @emeraldgirl08, does your current heatsink have (2) heatpipes or one?

Thanks guys!

Harry. I haven't taken off the bottom casing yet so I'm not sure. I had started but had to do other things yesterday and did not get back to it. Looking at the HMM it does not seem as easy as any other T- or R-series ThinkPads I have worked on- Drat!

That's okay though it'll be a good learning lesson for me considering I have not shied away from any ThinkPad disassembly yet

erik. The fan I have in my X200 has an FRU of 45C9549. I couldn't find an FRU that corresponded on the HMM for FRU 45C9549. There is an FRU 45C9550 but it seems that is for a 35-watt CPU.
I totally forgot to include rotational speed in this equation Harry thanks! I'm going to pop off the keyboard and take a peek again at the other numbers that were on the fan including voltage. I'm guessing fan RPMs aren't on it but I'll take a peek anyway.

since the fans themselves are identical, you can't go wrong with either one. it's quite possible your current fan only has one heat pipe. if that's the case then what you want is 45N4782.
FRU numbers are updated and substituted all the time. it's very likely to happen in older systems, especially when improvements or component vendors change. the HMMs never list old FRU numbers for cross reference, either, making it difficult to discern revisions of parts.
45N4782 will work perfectly fine in your system. after all, it's designed for your exact specs. 45C9550 will also work perfectly fine. if this were my system, i would purchase whichever one matched the original heat pipe configuration and not worry about it. like i said, the actual fans on each of these units are 100% identical.

Thanks erik. It looks like the company that is selling the 45C9550 has a 30-day returnable policy so I'm going to order the fan. I am taking two classes this summer so I don't want to chance the X200 to suddenly start developing high temps! Thanks again guys!
