ThinkPad X220 SSD

#1 Post by frenchd » Mon May 23, 2011 11:11 am

Hi -
Has anyone yet sussed out which SSD Drives are compatibile with the new X220 range?
The existing disk looks like a micro drive (1.8"?) and i need to replace this with an SSD.
The only 1.8" SSD I have found out there so far is the Intel X18-M ..

Is that the correct type of drive to fit this machine, an 1.8" unit?

Thanks

The X220 has a 2.5" drive bay, but is limited to drives that are 7mm in height.

You can see my list of drives I have found to work with 7mm drive bays.

Good man! thanks for the info and the post

Just so you know, since you sent this message I had another look at my X220 and actually the OCZ Vertex II 160GB drive i originally bough will fit! I have to install it without the drive tray and the rubber side protectors, but it will actually slide it and connects up... i might just give it a go with this drive installed as it is. It seems secure.

Thanks again

Which will only matter if you want/use WWAN.

hi all,

I recently installed an intel 310 40 gb mSATA to my X220 and have reinstalled Win 7 with all of the lenovo drivers. I still have my original 320 gb HDD with the factory installed Win 7 on it. How do I wipe this drive clean, since I want to use it just for regular data and some program storage? Thanks!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a particular mSATA drive for an X220, or is the Intel 310 the only game in town at this point in time?

I think the only company other than Intel offering msata drives is Renice. They were spamming over on NBR, which doesn't exactly say quality. I don't know much about them. I wouldn't imagine they're the gold standard like Intel. I got lucky and bought the 80GB Intel the same day I bought my X220i, which happened to be the first day the X220 was released. It seems like right when the X220 was released was when the 80GB went MIA and has been hard to find since. They were on NewEgg a couple of Fridays ago, but were gone in like a half hour. I suppose ebay is your other option. You could do the 40GB, but the specs aren't as good and you're cutting it kind of close if you're running W7 size wise.

Intel makes the most reliable, Renice makes the fastest and has the highest capacity offerings. I don't think Pretec's offerings are available yet.

MyDigitalSSD seems to be making headway. Good price/performance. A company rep is being pretty active on NBR but folks seem to be liking the product.
