Thinkpad x220 - Problem creating recovery disks.

#1 Post by optimus114 » Thu Jun 09, 2011 6:11 pm

I tried creating recovery media using the option in thinkvantage toolbox but it is getting stuck at " Files are being extracted..". I waited for 2 hours before killing the process. There is a new partition named "System_DRV (:S)" in My Computer. I am using ASUS SDRW-O8D1S-U external DVD drive. Any suggestions?

To the best of my knowledge you 'must' use CD media to recreate recovery disks. Now if you are trying to create a recovery backup that is another story. Which are you trying to do?

I used all DVD's (4) to create the Product Recovery Media on my X220. I used a Lite-On external USB dvd writer. It is true that the first disk could be a CD as the bootable Rescue Media fits on a CD.

Sorry, I don't know the solution to your problem.

my X220 failed with creating factory recovery media, too, and i've probably done it a hundred times over the years on various systems.

call support at 800-426-7378 and explain the situation.   they'll be able to send recovery media to you.

welcome to the forum, btw! ;)

So I can't use DVDs instead of CD's? I don't know why it's taking forever on "files are being extracted". I guess I have to call lenovo support for recovery disks. What to do with that partition (System_DRV (:S)) ?

That Sys Drv partition is your active partition. You need it if you want to use your machine.

The recovery partition can be removed once you get the recovery disks made or obtained.

IIRC, you need a CD for Disk 1 (the boot disk) but can use DVDs for the remaining disks in the factory recovery set, but it is a couple of years since I needed to burn a set......

As I stated above, I used all DVD's (although I could have used a CD for disk one) with my X220. I even tried them out on a second hard drive that I bought, and they worked fine.

Good to know. I wonder when the 1st disc had to be a CD changed?

Ditto for all DVDs on my X220. I never watched the recovery process but wonder if the OPs new partition is created while making the recovery disks and is deleted once the process is completed?

FWIW, I just created a set of recovery discs for my X220 today. I selected to create a boot, and data discs. On the first screen that pops up it does specifically say that the first disc must be a CD. Now, if another type of disc works for the first one then great, but I just wanted to point out that a CD is still a requirement according to the R&R Recovery Media creator utility.

This is interesting. I tried to create the "Factory Recovery Disks" from the hard drive that I used the first set on and I got an error message that I can only create one set.

On my T42 I could always create a new set (from a new drive) once the disks were used to set up that new drive.

I hope I am making myself clear.

Like you I have never seen this before.

I have always been able to create recovery media on a system setup from recovery media.

Another reason to clone your new systems drive and have it as a spare.

I must have missed the "must be a CD" message when I created my recovery disks. I used all DVD-R disks. I'm using Lenovo's USB DVD recorder. I just installed my boot DVD and it booted and presented me with the recovery menu. I'm going to be ordering a SSD drive so I'll know for sure if the boot DVD works but it appears that it does.

I know it's a late post, but I had the same issue and I think I resolved it. Made an account just to help out.
Open up task manager and kill the imagex process after you get stuck at the extracting files screen. That should unfreeze the program and let you finish.

Good luck! :thumbs-UP:

You guys should really use the usb drive option. I created it via usb and use ghost or other image software to make a backup copy. Its faster using usb, no disk swapping.
