T220 -- Which Wi-Fi adapter and how many antennas?

#1 Post by SteveDC » Sun Jun 12, 2011 5:45 am

For a new T220 order, which Wi-Fi adapter would you suggest? The choices today seem to be:

1. Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000
2. ThinkPad b/g/n
3. Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN)
4. Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 [which I presume is 3x3]

Also, 2x2 or 3x3 antennas when picking a display option? I won't be using WiMAX or other mobile broadband, just Wi-Fi (and Bluetooth). I know more antennas are better for 802.11n, but I somewhere, maybe regarding one of the T Thinkpads, I read of an issue where only 2 antennas are available for Wi-Fi if one is using Bluetooth, or has a camera, or something.

It's the camera. You can't order a camera with a 3x3 antenna also on order. My suggestion would be the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN) if you want a camera. If not, then any choice is OK. You might be speed limited on 'N' wireless with the 1000 card IIRC.

The 3 antenna 6300 is the best card. The 6205 with 2 antennas is the second best. All assuming you don't live in a WiMax area or want it.

Order the 6300 if you don't want a camera and the 6205 if you do.

Just for reference, I ordered a camera for my regular X200, but found I had three antennas in my display bezel. A little bit of moving work and some double sided tape had the antenna relocated about 4" to the right of where it used to be with the camera happily installed. I haven't messed with an X220 but a similar maneuver may be possible.

Does it work well to take a 3 antenna card (6250) and put it in a 2 antenna T420s? Or should I look for a 2 antenna card?
