I have noticed that the sound quality of the X220 built-in microphone is less than that of my previous X61.

The X220 is specified to have "dual digital microphones". Are the microphones located begin the two small holes just behind the screen? - why dual microphones?

What are your experience with the quality of the X220 built-in microphones?

Best regards

Generally speaking, dual microphones allow you to do more signal processing such as noise cancellation or noise isolation. On certain Thinkpads there is a utility to change the microphone mode from directly in front of the computer (single user) to a conferencing mode which picks up users in a larger area around the computer.

At the very least, having two microphones spaced apart provides two channels of input (stereo) for removing background noise.

I tried switching the microphone into conferencing mode and this improved the sound quality quite quite a bit.

It seems to me that the noise canceling feature that filters out background noise also affects the sound quality. In single user mode the sound varies in volume and becomes a bit noisy and choppy.
