so I finally decided to put a password on my laptop, and I've always used the same on, so I used it this time too.

My password was 4 simple numbers, and I use the same one for BIOS and the hard disk pass.

I got in once without issue. Then my computer froze, so I turned it off and turned it on again. It still accepts the master / BIOS pass but now does not accept that same code for the hard disk pass.

Is this a motherboard issue, a drive issue, or something else? I had the original hard drive so I put that in and it worked. I set a password on it and it worked. The fingerprint was recognized as the password for both the BIOS and hard drive.

With the ssd I also tried variations of my password in case I typed it wrong and none of those worked.

Since the BIOS password is connected to my fingerprint login, and it accepts my fingerprint for the master/BIOS pass why wouldn't it work for the hard disk pass on the ssd? On the first and only boot successful boot after the passwords were set the fingerprint worked for the BIOS password but not for the hard drive, so I typed it in manually and it worked that one time.

2 boots prior I ran lenovo update which included the active protection system (useless for an ssd user) along with on screen optimizer. Might this have affected it? Did the lenovo software kill my ssd?

Sounds like the SSD had a problem if the laptop just froze out of the blue. Regardless, if the HD password does not work the SSD is a hockey puck now.

Okay, so it's a brick. I've come to terms with that.

What I want to know is how and why.

Could updating software through Lenovo System Update (specifically active protection) have screwed up the HDD password?

Is it your Vertex 3 SSD? Try Googling "Vertex 3 password", I found a number of threads on various forums having similar issues with yours. It seems to be a problem with the Vertex 3.

I have lost confidence in OCZ's SSD. They are always the fastest in benchmarks, when they work that is. It seems that they always release their SSDs with premature firmware. I was always temped to buy a their new SSDs when I saw their reviews, and only to get discouraged by their numerous compatibility issues that took dozen of firmware revisions to fix.

It's an OCZ Agility 3 (so it's similar to the Vertex 3, just one step below)

I've started to lose confidence in them too. Performance numbers are erratic (differing greatly even with identical hardware), and now this.

I ordered a replacement but I'm not happy about it. It's going to take me hours to get it back up and running with everything configured and installed.

... I forgot to make a disc image... so I'm kicking myself about that too.

Oh yea, I mean the Agility 3. As far as I know, the Vertex/Solid/Agility 3 all use the same controller, but with different of NAND flash? So I suppose if there is a firmware problem with 1 of them, the other 2 may have similar problem too.

OCZ was one of the first to start selling afordable SSD... using the infamous Jmicron controller. Then they introduce the Vertex series with the Indilinx controller, the first SSD that is comparable to Intel's offering in terms of speed. But again, like the Vertex 3, it was also plagued with compatibility problems in the beginning. I appreciate them being one of the major players in the SSD market to drive the price down, but they really need to do more stability and compatibility testing before releasing a product.

Yes it seems that the OCZ drives have problems with passwords... no more password for my SSD replacement... which I don't like because I prefer drive encryption.
