x220 weights: x220 bare, hdd, speakers, batteries, coolers

I weighted some parts of the x220 on an industrial grade weighing scale:
  • sata hdd 105g
  • non-ulv cooler 59g
  • ulv cooler 31g
  • expresscard slot 11g
  • speaker assembly 11g
  • 4 cell sanyo battery 191g
  • 9 cell sanyo battery 488g
  • x220 without expresscard, without speakers, without battery, without hdd, with msata, with ulv instead of lv cooler: 1.046 kg
The intel msata was not measured, it should be around 7g. When I first hold my x220 it was heavy out-of-the-box ( 1.385 kg ). Now it is 1.237 kg and I do notice a weight difference, although it is not breath taking. The competition (panasonic n10 with comparable battery life and sata hdd) is 1.115 kg and with mini pci ssd it would be even less. Due to the horrifying high yen this "competition" product costs more than twice than the x220 (up to 3x!), so price wise it is not in the same league. But at least it comes very likely with panasonic batteries :)

can you give more details on which components you exchanged/removed from x220 to lower the weight?

I currently use a x220
without expresscard,
without speakers,
without battery,
with msata intel 310 ssd instead of hdd,
with ulv instead of lv cooler
and it weights: 1.046 kg

If you are using it without a battery, its not really a mobility device any longer........ :??:

I copied the text of my first post. My current equipment is the x220 bare (without expresscard, without speakers, without battery, without hdd, with msata, with ulv instead of lv cooler: 1.046 kg) plus the 4 cell sanyo battery (191g). 1.237 kg.

The display is as good as the one of the T60, maybe even better. The palmrest is far too small. The panasonic N10 has a much larger palm rest, battery life is nearly doubled and it is around the same weight, but the display is far worse.

Today I removed some more stuff as unused antennas and the unused and unwanted keyboard and indicator leds and now it weights 1.212 kg with the battery and 1.022 kg without battery. This is 0.173 kg less than when I got the notebook first time.

I think that your x220 is anorexic.

Today i removed my GF's eyes and ears, she is now 0.173kg lighter than when i got her the first time; also, she now has less demand for the compliments.

:)

A notebook with camera and microphone with the addition of malware can do very uncomfortable things.

I ordered my notebook without camera, the microphone can not be removed. But I did remove the speakers, so that in any circumstance the notebook only outputs audio when it is docked or I use headphones.

Question: How much of this is the difference in the smaller battery, and how much is the various crippling surgeries you performed?

Edit: OK, re-read it. If I understand correctly, it's the same 4-cell battery you are using, so the difference is mostly the mSATA SSD vs SATA HDD.

Is the weight reduction actually noticable when you carry it? I have a MacBook Air 11" (2.4 lbs) and the X220 with 9 cell (3.3 lbs) and the difference of those two are extremely noticable. My old MacBook Air was 2.3 lbs and honestly I cannot tell the difference between the old one and the new one.

That's the weight for the 6-cell. X220 with 9-cell is 3.67 lbs, according to Lenovo's tabook.

The difference is hard to tell. I have here on one hand a 15.6 inch notebook (Panasonic B10) and on the other hand a 12.5 inch x220. It feels the 15.6 inch feels lighter.

The 15.6 inch Panasonic B10 weighs 1.282 kg (without battery) and the x220 weighs 1.212 kg. So I am not so sure you can feel a difference of 0.06 kg when the size is completely different (The B10 is thicker and of course a little bit larger).

I'll sell the x220 as the 15.6 inch B10 is so much better for working. Screen size matters a lot.

My bad. That said, does removing speakers and what-not make a NOTICEABLE difference?

The difference between extreme stripped down x220 and usual xx220 is with 4 cell battery 0.173 kg (0.38 pounds).

And is it worth the price (lost function)? Did it void your warranty?

In the end - I think it is not worth it :) The weight difference is not much enough.

Just use a 4 cell battery and install a msata ssd.

OMFG o_O

You ripped of innards of your brand new, top-of-the-line, quite expensive laptop, loosing warranty in the proces, to shave of 173grams?

My smartphone weighs about the same. And I'm using two of them :)
And since I've killed my battery in less than year, I have to carry PSU for my X200. Another ~500grams.

Last, but not least, there's about 10 to 12kg of documents travelling with me all the time (I carry them because I have to, and I don't have a car) :D
My musculature has improved noticeably since I've this job ;P

And my girlfriend is 8kg heavier now, than she was in January.
My cooking skills are obviously high level ;P

So... stilll.. I have no idea why have you done this?
Please explain.

I am fastidious about laptop weight as well, having removed the WWAN antenna and card from my Toughbook Y5 only to shed 0.03 lbs. But ssd_thinkpad is even more obsessed with weight minimization than I am!

I like the Lego-like nature of Thinkpads, so I've added:
*Camera
*Bluetooth
*WWAN antennae
replaced:
*sticker on palmrest (it came off)
* LED Sticker with BT and WWAN icons
*LED cable (my GFdamaged it throwing x200 from the couch couple of times)
* dead 6-cell battery with 9-cell

TODO:
* WXGA+ (since I have LED backlight I can't have AFFS :cry: )
* WWAN modem (I have to choose right one, since nation-wide free HSPA+/LTE internet isn't working with 3507g)
* 256GB SSD (expensive SOFTB)
* I/O card cause my GF damaged headphone jack :/
* LCD frame cause I've broken it in few places
* PSU for slim version cause 90W brick is heavy as... brick ;)

The last one is the only mod I would do to shave off weight.

For me, performance, looooong battery life (I'm planning to buy x220tablet, but it's expensive, and I don't need it ;P ) and comfort are far more important than weight.

I shaved a lot of weight by getting the X220 instead of the T420.

This is more the weight a foot soldier has to carry! I have made another weight reduction in buying the lightest shoulder and backpacks for my notebook. With your weight a very good backpack will do wonders :) The x220 was by the way the cheapest notebook I ever bought - around 700 USD which is nothing translated in Euro :D
