Replacing LCD - will it void my warranty?
Replacing LCD - will it void my warranty?
I am going to ask a friend of mine (who works for a laptop repair company) to replace the LCD on my T410. He can source the part cheaply and do the work for free.
I will be changing from a WXGA to a WXGA+ resolution screen. Will my warranty be invalidated if I don't use a Lenovo service centre to source the product and carry out the work? If so, how likely is it that they will notice that the screen is different to the original one, if I ever need to send it in for some other unrelated warranty repair?

Re: Replacing LCD - will it void my warranty?
Also, a follow up question:
Is it possible for me to find out my current screen manufacturer/part without removing the screen?
EDIT: Used Moninfo to find out my screen is a Samsung LTN141AT15001
I'd prefer to try a different screen manufacturer, since the viewing angles and contrast are so bad on my current one. There seem to be a couple of options for this laptop in WXGA+ resolution, LG Phillips and Samsung (that I know of).
Also can anyone recommend which of these LCDs is best? Not that bothered about total brightness since the one I currently have is too bright when full on, so I can afford to lose a bit of brightness, if it's in exchange for better performance in the other areas I mentioned.

Re: Replacing LCD - will it void my warranty?
The short answer is "Yes if Lenovo picks up on the fact that you replaced the screen".
That being said, if you want to upgrade the screen and keep the machine, there's no other way of going about it.
Good luck.

Re: Replacing LCD - will it void my warranty?
So, if I were sneaky like a fox, kept the old screen and swapped it back in the event of needing a warranty repair for something else - then I should be alright? I think this is the route I'll have to take, as I shudder to think what Lenovo would charge to fit a new screen....ajkula66 wrote:The short answer is "Yes if Lenovo picks up on the fact that you replaced the screen".

Re: Replacing LCD - will it void my warranty?
First of all, Lenovo will NOT upgrade the machine for you, regardless of what you'd be willing to pay.
Secondly, your train of thoughts is correct. Keep the old screen just in case...
