T410 randomly shuts down

#1 Post by rakirkp » Thu Jun 21, 2018 5:37 pm

Recently, I hear the death knell chime which may be the same as the low battery warning-- up to 3 times then the T410 shuts down. It restarts normally. The battery says it is in good condition and the CPU temp is in the mid 60s. The bios is version 6IET74WW (1.34) and Windows version is 10.0.17134.112 which may represent recent upgrades to both. Some recent Lenovo "applications" such as "Vantage" are running.
Suggestions thankfully welcomed.

i have a intel 410 that was always perfect.

My Nvidia 410 not so much... it runs hot and I think I cleaned it out and it runs better now but I never seen nothing that wasnt temp related on it.

Is the battery installed in your laptop the genuine Lenovo battery? If it's not, consider buying another replacement battery. In recent days I have encountered a similar problem with my T43p. I bought a battery replacement, for which the energy management system generates randomly occurring instantaneous signals about the discharge of the battery. After a while, the situation returns to normal, and after resuming the computer, the battery status returns to the last saved state from before hibernation. If I hook up the original IBM / Lenovo battery to my laptop, the problem described above does not occur. It seems that low quality replacement batteries are not able to maintain the proper voltage level under load, which is interpreted by the computer as a full discharge of the battery.

Thanks for comments.

TPFC reports CPU temp mid 60s. This is a NVidia NV3100 machine. Is there a utility that will show the GPU temp? I replaced the fan/heatsink about a year ago.

The battery appears to be a genuine Lenovo type 55++; Sanyo manufacture 2/2012; in service 4/13. I agree, it could be a glitch in the battery or the power circuitry that generates a false shutdown command. I can try to disable that.

I realized it's not shutting down. It's hibernating. That is what the power management does at critical battery level. The battery meter says 79%; I have set the charge threshold to stop charging at 80%. And the mains are connected. Another user has similar problem and was advised to check the power connector and replace the battery. Sounds like a plan for me also.

HWMonitor should tell you GPU temp.

The heatpipe for the NVS 3100m is an incredibly tiny noodle thing and the heatsink is already barely enough to cool a hot headed Arrandale. But with a good paste job and dusting as needed, it should operate fine.

Apparently it's not the battery... Replaced it and after a couple days it hibernated. I reset the charge threshold to 90% and set the critical battery threshold as low as possible and the low/critical battery on AC action to none.
