T410 - need GOOD new battery

#1 Post by pjk » Mon Jan 06, 2020 2:58 pm

I've never messed with the 3rd-party/generic batteries on my Thinkpads, always bought the original ones.

But I need a replacement 9-cell battery for my T410, and I can't find an OEM one that works.

I bought one on ebay listed as "open box" in the original box (manufacture date 2009) that wouldn't charge, wasn't detected by the OS.

I bought a brand new, sealed one, in the original box (manufacture date 2011) that had the same problem. Tried leaving it charging for a day, nothing.

It seems that all of the unused OEM batteries out there are too old to work. (I had heard of this "shelf life" problem with Li-Ion batteries, never experienced it personally. Well I guess I have now..)

Anyone know of a GOOD aftermarket 9-cell battery replacement (8.4Ah, 94Wh) that actually works? Most of the "9 cell, 55++" 3rd-party batteries I find on eBay are either 6600mAh or at the most, 7800 mAh.

Did some Amazon searching, and despite various sellers claiming to sell 8.4Ah, 94Wh replacements, many reviews suggest they are lying.

How about batteries for T400? I need one of those, too.

TIA

I have found the Green Cell brand to be rock solid...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=green+cell+T410

The two 6 cell packs I bought for my T410 both use Sanyo branded cells (I believe Panasonic owns Sanyo).
Daily driver since 2011: T410, i7-640M (formerly i5-520M), 8GB RAM, EVO 860, 1440x900, Windows 10.

You can also buy 70+ and 70++ batteries that work with the T410. Probably more options for OEM and in box that still work.

Thanks for the reccomendation.

Unfortunately I don't see any versions equivalent to the original 9-cell battery, looks like the highest-capacity model they are selling is 6600 mAh. (The OEM 9-cell is rated at 84 Ah / 8400 mAh)

I'll keep that brand in mind for the future, though.

That's very interesting. I had noticed that my searches on ebay were catching some of the 70++ batteries too.

What was that originally designed for, the T420/T520 generation?

I'll poke around and see what I can find from that series, thanks.

This turned out to be a great suggestion because I see that not only does Lenovo specifically state that the 70+ and 70++ will work with the T410, they are actually still selling brand new ones if I decide to go that route. :D

Once again, great tip.

It's from the T430/T530 generation and up (includes L series and some other ones that use the same battery). You can search around the forum for other features. If you ever plan on getting something from this generation, be aware that the 55+/55++ batteries can be used, but not charged because of new chip technology.

Yes; however, there is an EC patch that removes this restriction.

Actually I was probably going to pick up a T430. (Because it's officially supported for Win10 but still uses chargers and docks I already have)

The 55++ battery compatibility info is interesting, but given that I no longer have any of those batteries that hold a decent charge, and it doesn't look like one can even acquire them in new condition any more, probably won't matter much at this point.

Sometimes when I pick up older models like T420 and T410 they come with the 55+/55++ series. They come around ~40Wh these days, but it's nice for me to just use them as beater batteries that I don't care much about.

And only a 350% markup over retail. Looks like I'll be getting one too....but not from Lenovo

Hello,

I bought an original battery on eBay from a german guy for my T410 and I'm absolutely satisfied with it :
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessorie ... /p/0A36303

I bought it ca. 80 € last year in january and the autonomy is great. I can use it also on my T420 and on my T430.

I was still using my T420 (with mSATA SSD, HDD, HD+ display, i7 2640M and 8 GB RAM) two days ago on battery. I read a *.PDF with Wi-Fi activated and screen light at minimum for 1 h 15 and I still had 88 % of charge.
Another day, I played WoW (private server with WoW Vanilla) also on battery and one hour later, I still had a charge of 75 %.

:)

Are you saying 55+ batteries would not work in T410 and T420 laptops?

Strange, I'm using 55++ batteries in both of my T410 and T420 thinkpads without any issues.

There was a misunderstanding. 55 batteries work in **10 an **20 series with no issues, but will not charge in a **30 series without an EC patch. **70 batteries work in all 3 generations without issues.
