T420 - wifi issues

#1 Post by JPH » Wed Oct 26, 2011 2:29 am

Hi all

Been searching for an answer to my woes but couldn't. I have a T420 (4177-CTO) that came with the Intel Wifi Link 1000 wifi adapter and although wifi N is enabled it is connecting to my routers at only 54Mbps. All my routers are 300Mbps N. And even older laptops T400/T61 are connecting at full speed. Have updated the driver but I am still stuck on 54Mbps with the T420. My x220 with its 6205 is always connecting at full 300Mbps without fail - both at home and in the office.

Any idea anyone?

This is quite a straightforward problem to fix. Make sure your wireless settings are for WPA2-PSK and AES.
Once you have set this up, and you are connected via an 'N' router, your wireless connection will exceed 54 Mbps.

Hi, thanks for the tip, but all my access points /routers are WPA2-PSK.

But I managed to sort out half the problem differently: I deleted the wireless network settings that were saved and reconnected and then retyped the passkeys. Amazingly the T420 is now connected to either of my home routers at 300Mbps. So I will now try that again in the office tomorrow and see if that works there too.

But for the life of me I cannot see a logical explanation to what I did... :?

It is the AES setting that is the important one. This is a choice in your Access Connections wireless settings. If it is set as anything other than AES you will be unable to exceed 54Mbps.

Anyway, I am really pleased it worked for you. It took me a while to sort it out when I first used 'N' wireless. :)

my t420 came with the standard b/g/n card is there anyway to install the centrino 6205 card? I now understand that the FRU # of that card is 60Y3253. However the question remains, will it work if I get one?
