T520 - 4242Y11 - No boot from ultrabay-hdd?

#1 Post by terry_mccann » Fri Oct 28, 2011 9:36 am

Hi guys,

I am using my T60 since ages ago in a way that I have two seperately encrypted HDDs fitted in the standard slot and the other with an Ultrabay adapter. With the T60 this worked well as I need two independent Windows-installations that must not "see each others files".

Anyway, to cut it short, this does not work anymore with my new T520 when using the Ultrabay adapter .... it simply does not boot from the HDD in the Ultrabay-adapter (FRU 43N3429)... When I swap disks the other one works fine, so it is not a question of a broken HDD or damaged MBR.

This morning I called Lenovo and they told me that this is normal and that with T520 the HDD in the adapter is not able to be booted from. Can this really be true? I mean, the DVDrom also boots from there and all the other machines I know of (T43 , T60 and T61) are also able to boot from there?

Any ideas? And if it really should be the case, I will have to do a 2-windows-install on one disk with bootmanager, but then how can I achive that the two installtions can't see each others file-structures?

Any help hugely appreciated....

Cheers
Terry

Well, what can I say? The stupid creep calling himself Lenovo Service Specialist was wrong indeed....all it took was resetting it to BIOS Setup Defaults and it worked....both booting from USB CDRom as well as from the Ultrabay are right on target now....phew.

lol..... must be the SAME person who 'trained' them ,,,,, and trained the USA "Tech Support" ..... as when I decided to log a SUPPORT call ; they told me -" nope Secondary drive cannot boot up".... on a W Series Drive ; because I have a RAID Setup !!!
|Phew ,,,, glad you found the solution , as I was in a MAJOR PANIC ,,,, so tested my W series ( yes know its not what you got - but they share the SAME BIOS ) ,,,,,, so was glad it works , still!!!

thanks

Yeah, works like a dream now....no more problem. I need this because I have two seperate windows installations, one for my job and one for myself, which must not see each other. With two HDDs I can seperarately encrypt them....

Greetings to the other end of the world from Germany ;-)
