T410; safe to hotswap unknown hdd's?

Hi,
Got a Thinkpad T410 equipped with an Ultrabay hdd-adapter for a second hdd. I would like to hotswap a relatively unknown hdd from a friends laptop (that just failed) in order to save her photos etc. How should I do this and still be safe against possible viruses etc? I know she had some virus issues before...
