Which to prefer T420 or T410 (have in mind the conf. )

#1 Post by opticalmouse » Thu Dec 01, 2011 3:36 am

So after using of couple thinkpads its time to pass to next one with new CPU. Currently I am using X60s and think to buy 14" T series thinkpad or maybe continue with X series and pas to an X201 or X220. So which one will be better to chose from these two below. As the T410 is cheaper and thought that better screen and discrete VGA, but second one is with new sandy bridge CPU and newer model of T series. And as I watch on youtube it is the better in case of durability and performance.

T410
i5-520M(2.4GHz), 4GB RAM, 320GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1440x900 LCD, 256MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100M, Fingerprint reader, Camera

T420
i5-2520M 2.50GHz Sandy Bridge Processor, 4 GB Ram, 160 GB 7200rpm, 1 GB İntel HD Graphics 3000, 14" HD (1366 x 768) LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, Web cam

Also I am still thinking about X-series. For me the most important is the durability because I cracked two times my X60s :P :D and defiantly want to pass to most durable one of current now models of thinkpad.

CPU will be about 20% faster on T420, although GPU will probably be somewhat faster on T410.

Between these two specific configurations, the T410 to me has the important advantage of higher resolution screen (1366x768 would be too low for me). If you were to compare to a T420 with the HD+ (1600x900) screen it would be a different story.

Thank you for your reply!
And what you think about the build quality of both. I am so confused about the T410, because I watched some videos on youtube.

I spotted no difference in build quality. The chassis is largely the same, except the slightly different form factors. The LCD lid is significantly thinner on the T420 which contributes to weight reduction, but might be not as durable, at least theoretically.
