should i use "ASRock Instant Boot"?

#1 Post by SchlageR » Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:25 am

http://www.asrock.com/feature/instantboot/#InstantBoot

it'd be cool to show off a faster thinkpad, but i don't want to damage it either :/

There is no "magic" in what happens during booting from different states. Cold boot, S3 (Standby), or S4 (Hibernate) take whatever time they take ... and there is not anything to be done about it.

I don't see anything that the software claims it does other than Standby or Hibernate .... and even if it were to claim otherwise, there is still no "magic" to be performed, so I don't know why one would add this software to machine.

It looks like it's only compatible with ASRock mobos so even if you tried using it I doubt that you could. Like the previous poster said it's just hibernate/standby.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't really understand what the software did, I just understood 'faster boot'. I don't even like to hibernate/sleep my thinkpad because I heard it was bad for the SSD. I boot fast enough anyways :p

Don't believe that nonsense! "Sleep" does nothing to the SSD. "Hibernate" uses the SSD to store/retrieve the contents of memory, but that is far less of a workout than loading Windows from scratch and completely shutting down Windows. Since in these machines the boot time is largely directly proportional to the disk activity, you can time the different boot modes and assess for yourself the varying degrees of stress on the SSD.

Really? I am installing an SSD so I am curious about this. I would think that when you hibernate you write to the SSD a lot more than when you shut down or start up.

You are correct. Booting and shutting down Windows does not give the SSD more of a workout than hibernate mode. What causes the SSD to have a finite life is the number of write/erase cycles, not the number of write/read cycles.
