No problem Brad, thanks a lot for taking the time to test it. I'd have gladly purchased the sticks from you had you had success.
But it would seem official that the T410 is, in fact, capped at 8gb sad to say. Thanks again.

I have a question.
Would there be much of a difference running 16 gig instead of 8? Say if the T410 could handle the full 16.What kind of programs people would need to run on a laptop to need 16gig ram..?

Large or Multiple Virtual Machines running Windows Server 20008 R2 with either SQL Server or DB2 and a client with Visual Studio or other development tool or maybe a Hypervisor like VMware ESXi and running multiple nested VM's.

have you tested the 8gb module with the newest BIOS installed on your thinkpad?
would be shame if it wouldn't support 16gb... no improvement over previous generation. and in the past, the next higher capacity did always work inofficially.

Unfortunately it's a limitation of the on chip memory controllers addressing - Intel reports the maximum memory the chip can use as 8gb
http://ark.intel.com/products/49653/Int ... -2_66-GHz) (my T410 has the 560m chip).
I agree with your comment about usually supporting more than the stated maximum, but in this case it's unfortunately not the case.

Ouch! I kind of made my purchase of my t410s assuming I could put 16GB ram into it.
Strange is, that the bios and my OS (linux, openeuse 11.4 64) recognizes 16GB when I put it in.
Also, I just saw on the lenovo support page that there is a December version of the BIOS, which includes "new microcode for the processor". I wonder if either that microcode can enable support for 16GB, or if there can be released some microcode that would enable the CPU to be able to use 16GB.
And the W510, with the same generation of processors supports 16GB?

The four memory slot quad core motherboards support 32Gb.

Interesting. My BIOS recognized the 16gb as well - machine would post fine, but not boot into the OS (Ubuntu linux 64 bit). So are you able to boot into openSUSE 64 bit without issue with 16gb of RAM installed? And 'uname -a' reports a 64-bit kernel (not a 32 bit one)? I'm using kernel 3.0.0-15... what kernel are you running? Everything I've read about this indicates it's a hardware limitation...

yes, sorry I did not mention. With 2x8GB crucial sticks, I am able to boot fine, with kernel 2.6.37.6 (64 bit), but when I load a lot of data into the memory, the the system crashes and does a hard reset. Also, when I run memtest86+, it crashes right at the beginning and does a hard reboot.
I hope so much that there is a fix via bios "microcode of the CPU" type of update for my T410s (no nvidia, BIOS 1.42) with i5-560m CPU and other same-gen T models.

Ok, not to beat a dead horse or anything, but I thought the max on the W510 was 16GB, with the W520 being capable of the 32GB. Are there confirmed cases of the W510 working with 32GB?

In a W510 I am running 24Gb (2 x 8Gb + 2 x 4Gb) for some time so I am 99% certain 4 x 8Gb will work.

Tom121, I feel for you in getting the T410 to increase the memory, I spent the better part of December trying to make the memory work my T410. I tried High Density and Low Density and in both slots and it would boot off a CD, DVD or Flash Drive but not off the Hard Drive this was with both Windows and Linux.
I have decided to buy a W520 to be able to do the virtualization I'm trying to do. I'm going to use the T410 as a server replacing a T41 and run two copies of Windows 2008 R2 with either Vmware ESXi or Hyper-V, then 8 GB won't be a hinderance.
