T420s randomly dies, is this a regular occurance?

Hi all,
Have here a US-purchased ThinkPad T420s, with an i7-2640m, 8GB of DDR3, Intel 160GB SSD and the whole NVIDIA optimus/Quadro NVS4200m.
I've had the machine a little over two months now, and just after the first month of owning it, the machine dies. I was writing emails on the machine while on battery power, and i get the standard NVIDIA bluescreen, which in itself was a regular thing to happen. I then hold in the power button, and the machine turns off for the last time. I attempt to turn it back on; nothing. I do the usual suite of repairs i'd do to any other machine (I'm an IT Technician), removing the battery, cmos, ram, HDD, static reset, external monitor, etcetc, nothing. The machine remains dead.
Last week i managed to get the power button to light up for about 3/4 seconds, before dying again.
My thoughts are of course that the GPU has died. But i'd like to ask you, the community, if you've ever heard of this happening before. I've seen it countless times when a machine is actually being tasked and working hard, or even if the machine is old and dying, but never on what was a brand new, factory sealed machine.
Of course i'm currently waiting on Lenovo's awful technical support on dealing with it. They say a new motherboard wont be with me (Scotland) for another month, which is another gripe.
Anyone else? Thoughts, opinions?
