T400 User's Manual?

#1 Post by THXpad » Tue Jun 19, 2012 7:05 pm

I got myself a T400 and it didn't come with a user's manual. The only thing I could find online was the ThinkPad T400 and R400 Hardware Maintenance Manual. This doesn't seem like a user's manual teaching how to use the laptop, but more of a technical manual. Is there an user's manual?

Thanks!

The HMM could be considered the users manual and I don't think there is a specific users manual. The HMM covers a lot of ground. Is there something you wanted to know?

Just the normal stuff, like how long to charge the battery and things like that. Also this is my first Thinkpad so I don't know how to use the fingerprint reader, camera, and even the keyboard light. Just a user's guide would be nice.

Will look at that, thanks. But it seems also to be a technical document.

Well the first two depend on your operating system, so you might want to consult your OS's documentation. The last one is simple: Fn + the the key with the picture of a light in the top right corner of your keyboard. Given that it's a light, there's really not much more than "on" and "off". ;)

That's for a tablet, not a T400!

There always has been a gap in the area of user's manuals for computers. The innovation cycle is so rapid that when the new machine is kicked out the door, nobody in the company understands it completely. In the time the tech writers would take to do their jobs, the product is already half way down the cycle that ends in discontinuation and replacement. So typical users manuals, as found in the box, tend to be generic, and more frustrating than informative.

Your best option is self study. As far as the fingerprint reader goes, I opened the Windows 7 control panel, clicked on "Lenovo Fingerprint", and began to study the behavior of the software by experimentation. You can't get locked out. The admin account always has the option to log in via password.

If you try and can't figure something out, ask here. But try first, because it will make your questions easier to answer.
