Hi folks,
Hope you are doing well. I have really benefitted from lurking on this forum for a while.
Been all around the interwebs and have been totally flummoxed on how to solve my current problem. I have a video camera that has HDMI-out, and I'm trying to figure out a way to connect it to my T410 and record YouTube videos for my business.
I purchased a HDMI cable and a HDMI-Displayport adapter. But when I plug my video camera in (Camera>HDMI>DisplayPort>T410) nothing happens. Can you give any suggestions on how to solve this?
If I need to purchase some other piece of equipment, feel free to suggest something. I was hoping my DisplayPort would allow Video-in, but if I have to purchase a card for my ExpressCard or something, I am more than willing.
Thank you!
Simon

I believe that the displayport is output only. You would need an hdmi video capture card like this one:

Please note that I have never used this card so I cannot promise that it will work for you. Also, some Express Card devices are not compatible with 64-bit OS, so if you need 64-bit, you need to ask the seller if it works

I've researched that card you referenced. Its a no-name card from Hong Kong. I'm surprised American manufacturers haven't made an Expresscard HDMI capture card, because there literally isn't one available...
So, fail. Bummer.
Anyways, I'm going to record the video non-streaming and just import the 720p HD video via SDCard and edit it in from there.
Thanks for your help!
Mods: feel free to close this thread.

HDMI capturing devices are scarce because manufacturers have to pay a huge premium to the HDMI foundation, IF they are allowed to make such a device at all. HDMI is all about DRM, copy protection and anti-piracy, and allowing devices to record from HDMI sources undermines all that.
You do have one possible option though: using a PCI Express HDMI capture card together with an
Express Card to PCIe adapter.

Even if someone did have a grreat hdmi capture solution, the sd card method would still be a better idea anyway.

Don't know if oit makes sense to necro this thread, but I am in a situation somewhat similar to the OP.
In the upcoming FW update from canon, the 5D mk3 will be able to deliver clean, uncompressed video out over HDMI, and thus there really is alot to be gained in some situations compared to internal recording.
I cannot yet afford an external recorder (the cheapest usable option seems to be

I'd love to figure out a solution that would allow me to do something similar on my w530..

They are out there. STARTECH ECHDCAP is one of them. I have no idea how they work, as I would never have this same need.
