Using an available WWAN card for a few things

#1 Post by clasys » Fri Sep 21, 2012 9:44 am

I have a T400 with the Ericcson card in it. Can I get this to do GPS? [Without being a cellphone customer. Towers are within range generally, but no intention of being a customer of any carrier this card works with.]

Second question: Clearly a working cellphone is allowed to call 911 in the US; anyway that function could be woken up as well?

Thirdly [which may have bearing on the first two]. The software points out I don't have a SIM card and won't go any further. What SIM would be needed for just what I ask above? Since it won't be activated, what is the minimum that would get it to work just barely enough [perhaps on ebaY, etc.]

Thanks for any info,

cjl

Yes. You will need a SIM inserted into the SIM reader on your T400 but it does not have to be activated with a 3G carrier, so just about any working SIM will do. If you have an old phone SIM you no longer use, just give that a try.

However, the WWAN card based GPS will only work where there is reasonable line of sight to the GPS satellites, so its generally not much use unless you are out of doors.

To start with there's no easily accessible voice facility available, so no!

Cheers,
