T410s Ram Question. (((Pic warning)))

#1 Post by arty_harvy » Sat Oct 13, 2012 12:08 pm

My T410s says 6Gb Ram, 5.86GB usable. WTF? No other system I have owned has had this issue. I have tried Re-installing windows multiple times, which has had no effect. If I install 8GB, It will say 8GB RAM, 7.68GB usable. There has to be something going on in the BIOS of this model in particular that is reserving some RAM, and I am determined to figure it out. Any Ideas?

Does your T410s have Intel integrated graphics only? It uses system RAM for graphics memory.

No. it has the Optimus, but I have it set to discrete only.

It is because the Nvidia NVS 3100m uses both dedicated memory and shared memory for graphics.

All computers have the ability to borrow from the ram for graphics purposes when necessary.

Ok, now I am learning.
From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978610
Note The amount of usable memory in the examples are not exact amounts. Usable memory is a calculated amount of the total physical memory minus "hardware reserved" memory.

8gb ram will most likely show 7.90gb available -- that's what several of my machines say, including my T400 and T410i :?

It looks like Nvidia NVS 3100m will give you 141 MB of hardware reserved (which shows 7.86GB usable) while Intel graphics uses 205 MB hardware reserved (and shows the 7.9GB usable).

Check the memory tab from the resource monitor and see how much hardware reserved that W520 shows with 2000m.

This is related to the issue that prevents 32 bit OSes to see more than around 3GB of system RAM, even when in theory they could see 4GB. They reserve some space in the upper section. With 64 bits it's pushed further but it seems like it never disappears.
Main: i5 3550, 16GB, Z68 Pro3 M, 64GB SLC, 320GB HD, GTX 650Ti, 21.5 FHD LED
T420: i5-2520m, 8GB, SSD: 64GB SLC (boot) | 128GB MLC (storage), HD3000, HD (1366x768), 6 Cell, BT, WebCam
X220: i5-2520m, 4GB, SSD: 64GB SLC (boot) | 128GB MLC (storage), HD3000, HD (1366x768), 6 Cell, BT, WebCam, FP
