t410 supervisor password problem

#1 Post by wolverine42 » Mon Nov 12, 2012 4:31 am

i have a t410. it was working normally. i removed the keyboard for a reason, then place it again. After that, i powered on and black screen appeared with a small lock icon upper left, requesting password. as far as searching on google, it should be bios password. i cannot enter bios as well.

i removed the keyboard again to remove the bios battery, removed it, waited for a while and place everything. i powered on the computer but it is the same.

1- why it doesnt appear before keyboard removal and started to appear after that?
2- how can i handle that?

thanks...

If it's the supervisor password, then at one point someone set it. I'd checked Lenovo's Hardware Maintenance Manual on Lenovo's support site.

Yes if it's the supervisor password then that's what is recommended in the HMM. Maybe the original user set the supervisor password and forgot to tell you when he/she sold it to you. It won't prompt you all the time but will prevent changes to BIOS settings.

Then you should be able to remove it by resetting the CMOS coin cell battery under your keyboard :)

No.

Power-on PW is gone once the CMOS battery is removed.

Supervisor/BIOS password stays there.

Just make sure it is indeed the Power-On password and not the Supervisor password and that it hasn't been set. If it is the SVP and you remove CMOS battery, than you'll be stuck in the loop of password and set date/time. Your only hope at that point (that I'm aware of at least) is either buy a new MOBO or bust out some wires and start decoding on a serial port.
If you don't know what you are doing than just do nothing at all and call Lenovo's support and explain to them the issue and hopefully they'll be able to guide you through it or give you some more reasonable options (besides replacing the MOBO).

The only advice that Lenovo support is allow to give in a situation like this is motherboard replacement. Period.
