Anyone else ever get crashes while going to sleep?

#1 Post by albo » Sun Feb 24, 2013 10:49 am

Hi Folks,

I've had a horribly annoying issue crop up recently. I'll put my T410 to sleep, but sometimes it turns the screen off and then just sits there, eventually crashing after 10 minutes or so. It's an intermittent problem. I reported it here: http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-su ... stall.html . The WiFi driver seemed to be the culprit, but after updating it, the problem remained and now seems that it might be related to the doze mode driver (part of lenovo's power manager, it seems). I'm not the only one to have had this problem, it seems: see http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-su ... rnate.html and http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=87466 .

I'm wondering if anyone else has ever had this issue, and if so, what did you do to fix it?

thanks!

I put my T410 (Win7 Pro x64 SP1) to sleep (Fn+F4) most nights and have never had a problem. I regularly use System Update so all the drivers like Power Manager & WiFi are up to date from lenovo.

See the Full System Specs link in my signature for detailed configuration info on my T410.

thanks nikki605 - searching around, it seems like some other folks who also have Connectify installed have a similar problem. I'm hoping it's connectify - only time will tell.

Could be your wireless card is the problem. Check the properties setting and make sure the checkbox that allows the device to be put to sleep is ticked off. If that fails, take it out and see what happens.

device can be turned off by the system is checked.

I have an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN. What do you use in power options - maximum performance? maximum power savings?

I use balance but that shouldn't matter.

Also, Lenovo Access Connections has a mobile hotspot feature that works a lot better than Connectify. It doesn't work with all of the ThinkPad wifi cards, but I know it does with the Intel 6200, 6205, and 6300 cards.

Crashing while going to sleep just crept up on my T420s. However, it does it immediately, not after 10 minutes or so. I typically close the lid to put it to sleep, but it results in the computer shutting down abruptly. If I Fn + F4, it looks like it is going to sleep, but sure enough, it crashes. It looks like it is going to sleep, and the moon LED indicator will light up for about half a second, and then it shuts off abruptly. No BSOD, just fades to black and that is it. I haven't updated any drivers and I have tried System Restore. Only thing I have changed is that I have installed Windows Updates.

**Edit: I just tried it with the charger plugged in, and it went to sleep properly and woke back up just fine. It is not working when on battery. I think I might have a hardware issue. Still investigating.

hey jayton,

I finally figured out my issue. It was Connectify messing with my sleep. I removed Connectify and all is well again. Do you have that proggie installed?

No, I haven't had a need for Connectify for the past year. It seems to be related to my UltraBay battery being discharged. For some reason it wouldn't sleep with the UltraBay battery at 0%. I'll have to see if the problem comes back.

ok - so, you don't have Connectify installed? I didn't have Connectify running or anything - merely having it installed was giving me problems.

I used Connectify on my T410 and T410s, but have never had it installed on this T420s. I suppose I should have started a new thread instead of trying to hijack your already solved thread.

I have experienced it every once in a while with my T410 (running Win7, Intel Wifi). Similar symptoms to those described by others here - put computer to sleep, screen goes black, but computer never actually enter sleep state. Instead it becomes completely unresponsive, although LEDs are still lit.

I haven't waited to see if it crashes after 5 or 10 minutes, since after half a minute it's already clear to me that it must be shutdown hard (usually it takes <5 seconds to enter sleep).

I never found the cause, but never looked for it either, since it happens so rarely (probably <0.5% of the time), that I don't care. I recall it only happened when I tried to do something else while the computer was trying to enter sleep (such as close lid, or undock it). But it doesn't happen every time I do one of these things, so it is probably a specific timing issue / race condition of power states.
