Hi all,

Got this Plextor pro extreme as long waranty, great reviews etc... Something that will last me ages.
But its hot... Where the palm rest its actually hotter then the regular HDD sata drive?

I am running linux 64, 4gig ram on a T400. Waiting on 4 more gig on the ram. Would that make a difference?

I thought the SSD where suppose to run cooler the the regular HDD Sata drive?

little update, I bumped into that link below, and this is what is happening... I even hovered the fan today as I was wondering why it was kicking in all thew time... This never happened with the regular HDD, then SSD is a defenitive NO No to me. Extreme! Yes, Extreme HEAT! My palm is too hot, the fan kicks in etc... This was a total waste.

I can't say that I understand why you are experiencing higher temps.

I can say however that the blog entry that you linked to is BS. Particularly this here:

^^^ I agree, a SSD is not even close to RAM speed never mind CPU speed.

A SSD, being flashed NAND memory based with no mechanical component is dead silent and much cooler than a HDD. Like RAM chips, which can and do get hot, a SSD can get warm to the touch but not "hot". And even then only when it is operating at full capacity for a sustained period.

Check that he M5 have the latest firmware.

Its hot indeed, not warm... And this only browsing the internet... Not really loading it with anything special...
I call Prextor later to see what they have to say about it...

The SSD is going back.
Called prextor who told me "its maybe where its mounted"...
Telling me I should mount it near the fan, or somewhere where there is some cooling... In a Laptop!!!

Dear me...

Just typing this and the laptop has been on for an hour I can already feel the heat...

Back to regular drive for me.

Dear me indeed. Next time you need an egg cooker may I suggest a frying pan?

Don't give up on a SSD based on this experience.

I had it on the bay as I wanted to format it but I can't... trying to delete as much as I could then bit by bit... and its was getting hot there too...

Not happy with plextor reply at all. Its not that they don't over heat, its me who put it in a wrong place... Dear me...

I do give up on the SSD, normal drive will do me fine. Oh, there was no battery improvement either, same on SSD as the regular drive, that was also why I got one, then its 2 regular drive, nil SSD.
SSD is defo not for me now.

I am tempted on a hybrid, but it might be the same as the chips at the front will get hot...

Don't throw the towel in general regard to SSD's just because you had a bad experience with an obviously inferior product. People usually are absolutely happy with SSD temps, and the issues you are describing definitely can't be attributed to SSD's in general, but rather all the contrary.

Yours truly would never want to go back to HDD for any of his good old T6x models, and exclusively trusts only well known older drives like the Intel X-25 G2 (aka Postville), and Samsung 470 (aka PM810) or Samsung 830 (aka PM830). I don't care about the brand names, but rather orient my choices based on technical merit of specific SSD models with a well known reliability history.

Instead of giving up altogether on the wonderful SSD benefits, better replace the trash you are basing your verdict on with some well known decent model instead, e.g. the Samsung 840 Pro (but do avoid the basic 840 without the "Pro" in its name) or maybe also the Crucial M4. Search the forum for the usual recommendations by experienced users and just follow their purchase decisions. You won't regret it.

I was going to get an hybrid SSD/ HHD, but strangely, once again I read the same about it in 1 review... Fan kicking in all the time and hard drive getting hotter... I think it was amazon. Then this is defently not for me, might be scar for life, but if another one got the same with the hybrid then a good old one will do me. No pointbuying something and taking all the bother to delete and reinstall it all... I actually had an old 160 gig HDD, and this is with this one I am typing this now Its indeed a little more noisy as turning, but its not that hot and the battery life is good. Then, I am OK with that
I am not too keen on samsumg mobiles phone at all, I had few and they were bad or near bad, didn't last etc... I know we are talking hard drive here but still, the brand didn't do it on the mobile then what to expect on the HHD...

If it behaved the way you described it, the particular SSD you used was no top one at all, but definitely trash. Never trust reviews which are not written by yourself. Thanks to your experience which just confirms my own doubts, i will never ever consider any Plextor SSD for the future unless proven to be of near perfect technical standing.

BTW, i rarely if ever have heard anybody using Plextor SSD's so far. On the contrary, these particular Samsung SSD's i mentioned in my former posts are well known good drives used by lots of our most capable forum members. I wouldn't want to have any of their smartphones either, but their SSD's are a completely different league of well done products. As written before, don't fall for the snake oil called branding when judging a technical artefact. Only technical criteria should be applied for proper evaluation.

Anyway, its your choice and your learning experience.

I've never seen a SSD get too hot, warm maybe but not hot.

Btw which size SSD did you get? I have a 64GB here but I think I might go a little bit bigger.

the one I had was 256.
Got a reply from scan telling the temperature range is between 0 to 70 degrees...
then plextor extreme can go up to 70 degrees, in a laptop... Dear me...
It was defenitly hot and not "warm".
The rubbers on the side of the HDD caddy were even smelling hot, when you start to heat at those temperatures, this ain't good for the palm of your hand that is resting just above it...
