T520 FHD IPS display mod (from Acer) possible ?

Acer has introduced new model http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Ace ... 610.0.html that has 15.6" FHD IPS matte display made by LG, LP156WF4-SPB1.

Would be such mod possible ? Any success ?

Either get such a panel and try it out, or get hold of its datasheet. Not sure which is more difficult.

I am impressed that the laptop/monitor brand that's notorious for choosing the worst and cheapest panels is now making a laptop with IPS. Would be nicer if this were a Timeline-series laptop though.

I am super interested in finding out whether this is possible. I'm on an aging T60 with IPS screen and would love to move to a T520 if this panel would work. Where would I begin to find out if it's compatible? I'm fully comfortable taking apart and reassembling laptops but I don't know how to read the spec sheets on monitors... Any risk of blowing the laptop or screen just trying it out? I assume there is but would love some input on moving this forward.

Assuming both are LED screens of the same size, do read the spec-sheets (IF you can find them).
Compare the pin-outs of both screens, if they are the same, you're nearly there.
Then compare the cable connector positions on the back of the LCD.
If also the same, you're done, otherwise get an adapter cable

Ugh, it seems impossible to find the pin-outs on these things. Wonder if LG has that info available to the public...

Thanks for the info. I have seen the FHD panels in the W520 and T520 and while they're decent, the big deal for me is the viewing angles. I use the T60 to watch movies in bed with the wife. That quickly ruled out my T420 and I'd like to get something a bit faster than the T60 but not at the cost of the viewing angles or awesome keyboard. Guess I will have to keep watching to see if anyone comes up with a workable mod. I've got a good potential source for inexpensive IPS panels but I lack the knowledge to properly test for compatibility. If anyone has these skills and would be interested in teaming up, let me know!

May I recommend a T601 FrankenPad in some shape and form?

There's a *lot* involved in such a mod...I'd be interested in it myself but am rather skeptical as well...

Which guts are you referring to as the T601? The T61 board with a Core 2 Duo 2.8ghz and the T61 mainboard? I've thought about it but honestly I'm really wanting something significantly cooler running since it's on my lap or chest most of the time and the Core 2 Duo stuff just always seems to get uncomfortably warm. The Core i3/5/7 stuff is such an improvement in that and the heat department that I'm thinking I'll stick with looking for that...

T601 = 15" T60/p frame housing a 14" T61 motherboard.

It doesn't have to run hot. With Intel graphics and a Penryn CPU it will be cooler than an ATi-based T60/p.
