(T410s) SD Card is recognized only after reboot

#1 Post by tim_s » Thu Jun 27, 2013 7:35 am

Hello,
[sorry for my grammar, im from germany.]
i've got a problem with the internal sd-card-reader of the t410s. When i insert any of my 3 SD cards while the system is running, it will not be recognized. The only solution i found is to reboot. This is a big problem for me and the cards working well on all other readers without reboot.
When i look into the "device manager" theres a yellow warning at disk drives -> SD Memory Card and it says : Windows cannot load the device driver because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory (Code 38).

this behavior is shown since ~1 week, the years before everything works well. yesterday i reinstalled the driver (Ricoh Multi Card Reader Driver 2.06.02.02 6hss74ww.exe) but the problem still exists.

how can i solve the mistake?
sending it to lenovo for repair? there is 16 months guarantee remaining

Thinkpad model: 2924-93G, OS: Win7pro 64Bit

thank you

Welcome to the forum!
The problem you are having is not with the Thinkpad -- it is with Windows. Sometimes Windows "loses its mind", and things like you describe happen. Usually a person can fix those errors, but sometimes not! In that case, the only solution is to reinstall Windows from scratch, i.e., not on top of the existing installation, but on a "clean" (i.e., cleaned of any previous Windows installation) disk partition.

Back to your present issue:
Go to Device Manager, right-click on the device with the yellow warning, and "Uninstall" it. Then restart Windows, and either let Windows rediscover and reinstall the device driver(s), or you reinstall the Lenovo device drivers manually, like you described.

You may have to try one way, then the other ... but most likely you will succeed.

(Sending the machine to Lenovo will result in Lenovo simply wiping out your existing Windows installation and reinstalling Windows back to the factory image that was originally shipped with the machine. That you could do yourself, if nothing else works and you still want to repair the problem.)

Good luck!

ok, i tried to uninstall and restart and reinstall the drivers several times but it doesn't help.
i think i'll reinstall windows.
would it be enough to format the ssd in the setup menu of windows7 or do i have to remove the ssd out of the thinkpad and format it extern with my PC?

You do not have to remove the SSD from the Thinkpad -- use the format/clean install options provided by the Windows installation procedure.

Two points:
1) If you use the Lenovo Recovery disks, then you will end up with a "fresh" install of the factory image, because that's the only option with that process.
2) Remember that reinstalling Windows will eliminate ALL your other installed software, i.e., after you install Windows, you will need to reinstall all your applications ... meaning that you need all the install programs, activation keys, etc., for all those applications. If you are aware of that, and if that is fine, then go ahead ...

Good luck!

for those who have similar problems:
the solution is simple, fast and works perfect. (from a windows7 forum)

execute following lines in "cmd.exe"

diskpart
automount disable
automount scrub
automount enable
exit
exit

I've been having the same problem on two T61P's. One running Vista Ultimate fully updated, the other Windows7 fully updated, both 32 bit.

Every month or so I take anothe whack at it, never any joy. And I just tried the automount commands on the Win7 machine. The "scrub" parameter is curiously undocumented in the online help, the procedure did *nothing* to change the situation though.

All I can figure is that the Vista machine didn't have the problem until last year, so something in the OS updates probably broke something in the Lenono driver, and I have to firmly blame the hardware drivers from Lenono since the entire world is not having these failures.

I've got a new computer coming in tomorrow, in theory, and I'll be curious to see if the sd card support on that is also defective. But as you are still under warranty, I'd suggest you contact Lenono and tell them "DOESN'T WORK. TAKEE FIXEE." and let them figure out how to implement the drivers for the OS. They've been paid to do that.

It might be MS's fault, but Lenono is obligated to deal with it, and if it is an OS problem, MS is legally obligated to fix it for Lenono. Not to the users--but to the OEMs who have contracted with them for OEM versions of Windows.
