Upgrading RAM on Thinkpad T410

#1 Post by allbrad04 » Thu Jul 11, 2013 5:58 am

When I try to upgrade the RAM from 2 x 2GB (4GB total) to 2 x 4GB (8GB total), the boot up process stops at the "starting windows" screen. I have been told that the bios might need tweaking!
I have tried booting with only one 4GB module loaded into the slot under the keyboard but this doesn't work either. Only reverting back to the supplied configuration of 2 x 2GB works.
What am I doing wrong?
Suggestions appreciated

What type of RAM did you get? I would suspect there's something wrong with the new RAM.

Thanks for your reply Cigarguy,
I have 2 x 4GB DDR3-1600, SODIMM by Integral.
I also have an 8GB single 8GB RAM card, (same spec as above).
Will that work also?
If so, I would prefer that option.

T410 takes 'only' 2x4GB RAM, and your problem is the RAM-speed.
T410 normally requires DDR3-PC8500 (AKA DDR3-1066) or PC3-10600 (AKA DDR3-1333)at best.
Anything faster (like your 1600) and you are in trouble!

In most cases, the RAM will down clock itself to the proper speed. I think the problem is due to something else, perhaps voltage (1.3v Vs. 1.5v), etc. I have tried 2x4GB Kingston 1600MHz in a T410 and it worked great with CPUZ reporting the correct speed of 533MHz (DDR3-1066). I am not familiar with Integral. Stick with one of the well known brands, Kingston, Crucial, Centon, PNY, Patriot, Corsair.
