Using TPFancontrol with overheating T410s on Win 7 (32-bit)

Hi there,

I have trouble with my T401s, which constantly overheats and shuts down, getting CPU temperatures of 70°C and above easily (going up to 90+°C), as measured with RealTemp. The fan is pretty silent, so I'm guessing it isn't running fast/strong enough. I've been trying to use TPFancontrol to make it go faster, but the program gives me 0°C values for all except CPU (APS, PCM, GPU, ...) which the readme says it shouldn't, so I'm afraid to push on.

Does anyone else have these issues with a T410s (I'm running a 32-bit Win 7 system)? Is anyone using TPFancontroller, and getting these strange 0°C values?

P.S.: TPFancontrol reports fan speeds of under 4,000 RPM for CPU temperatures close to 70°C. Does that sound off to you? No idea how fast it should go ...

Is it a T410s or T401s?
What CPU or machine type?
Have you checked to see if it's a heatsink issue?
Got any good quality thermal grease around?

banhammer420k: I do not think that there is a such thing as T401s.

headfirst: The T410s should be able to run over 90C just fine without shutting off. I have stress tested my T410s with IntelBurnTest and it puts down some decent numbers at those temps when tpfancontrol is set to 7.

Are you using tpfancontrol in smart mode? Try Smart Mode 2 when right clicking the tpfancontrol icon in the tray. All of the 0C values in tpfancontrol do not effect much. However, to correct that problem, edit TPFanControl.ini and change the line that says "UseTWR=0" from a 0 to a 1.

banhammer40k: Need to check the CPU model when I get home, and I must admit I haven't opened the thing to check for dust and stuff. I've never done this, so I was looking for a software solution first.
jayton4: I've only been using TPFancontrol in observation mode, i.e. with just monitoring; the readme is thick with warning that you can damage your processor if it doesn't work properly, and the program didn't report the temperatures of GPU etc. as it should, so ... That's what I was originally wondering. How to get TPFancontrol to report all temperatures properly.

In any case, since I've come back from a weekend trip, my machine won't start up anymore; almost immediately after starting to boot, it reports a "Fan error" and switches off I can't even make it to the BIOS or start in safe mode or sth. Guess I'll really have to check the hardware now.

Regarding that fan error - get it serviced if it's still covered by warranty. If not, replace the fan, or better - the entire cooling assembly - fan&heatsink (ebay). Just pay attention what part you need (integrated or discrete graphics).

AIX: Thanks for the the hint+link to the "special version" TPFancontrol! I'm past warranty but getting the laptop fan unit replaced as we speak. Will try TPFancontrol again as soon as I get the machine back.

That's weird. My Thinkpad T430 doesn't show so much sensors (like my T500) but only the CPU sensor. I think it's a incompatibility of Tpfancontrol with the Ivy Bridge platform. More than that I get crazy behaviour of the utility like failing to read temps and other stuff.

Thinkpad models after the first-generation Core i series generally show less sensors. My X220 only shows CPU Core 0 temp, Core 1 temp, ACPI temp, and fan speed.

It's probably not an incompatibility issue, just the laptop itself having less thermal sensors.
