I have a t410, i am starting to hate this laptop the lid is cracking in half within the first dew days of owning it, the touchpad is wearing fast, The DVD rom has died, it makes a noise but does not read anything, it died 30 minuets ago, it makes a lot of flexing noise when you put your hands on it, the build quality is probably below consumer grade, can't boot linux from the SD card reader, has no way of using the intel graphics, what the hell where they smoking?
are there any other laptops i should be looking at to replace this Chinese junk? that is better built

I'm assuming you didn't buy this new? It doesn't sound as though it's been treated well - maybe your beef is with the previous owner?

@Wolfman. I agree.
@dux5. If you purchased the T410 off of ebay you might want to send the seller a message about your concerns before too much time passes. I have had two bad experiences with fleabay. I rarely use the site these days. I am certain that there are sellers who will bandage a laptop that will hold just long enough in order for the seller to collect a lump sum deposit.

Have you actually managed to crack the lid?
the touchpad is wearing fast,
The palmrest/touchpad is one aspect of T410 that I positively hate.
The DVD rom has died, it makes a noise but does not read anything, it died 30 minuets ago,
Wasn't this machine still under warranty? If so, just place a call and they'll send you a replacement drive.

You should've gotten an Intel-only T410, there's a boatload of them around.

Well, chances are that you'll be replacing it with another Chinese-built unit, unless you buy a Panasonic.
What are your requirements?

It is right there on the website.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... fault.page?
Click on the link, put in your serial number, and it will tell you if you can upgrade the warranty. Likely not since it has already expired.
My T410 is one of the most sturdy and best built laptops I own. The problems you are experiencing are not typical.
If you are replacing parts like the lid, and the lid then cracks, I would hardly fault Lenovo design for something like that.
Even the Japanese (Sony, Toshiba, Fujitsu) and the Koreans (Samsung) build all their laptops with CMs in China. Like someone else said, if your experience with a chopped up T410 has caused you to believe the design is subpar, then Panasonic Toughbooks or a custom ruggedized laptop from a smaller manufacturer like Getac is really your only choice.
I would highly disagree that the T410 is lower end than a consumer grade laptop.
Good luck!

More info and/or pix from the OP would be helpful. This is not my experience at all with the T410 model. Other than a somewhat easily worn touchpad, these are quite solid ThinkPads. I have owned and supported several.
(The T400s & T410s models did have easily cracked palmrests.)

I've had my (new) T410 for 3 years now and love it. I've had no problems with it (knock wood) like the OP described. But in all fairness, I don't use it like a typical laptop is probably used. It spends most of it's time on my desk and only occasionally travels. I've even done a couple upgrades like an additional 4GB of memory (8GB total) and adding an OEM webcam with parts purchased on eBay from China. Both upgrades went off without a hitch.

sorry to hear about your T410 woes
I will double the comment about disliking the T410 palm rest, of all Thinkpads I've supported over the years and out of all Thinkpad/Lenovo parts I have taken off/replaced etc, the T410 palm rest part tops my list for the most "disliked part," (next is the LCD assembly on a T61 Wide screen).
Anyway, the cd drive cable breaking I have seen before. Not real common but yes it does happen. I've got a new one I can sell you for $15 if interested
I do not use Linux, but I was unaware that the SD card reader is a device that one can boot the laptop from. Do you have other OS's installed by chance on other SD cards and they boot up just fine and the Linux SD does not? Or ??
Sounds like either a driver issue or else you are trying to do something that cannot be done
