T410 HDD replacement: SATA or MicroSATA?

#1 Post by Tsomi » Sun Aug 11, 2013 7:12 am

Hello,

I have a Thinkpad 410 whose hard-drive is dying, so I'm looking for a replacement. The actual model is a 3Gb/s 7200RPM 2.5" 160GB SATA drive.

So I went there for some information:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-75387
... but the Hard drive features only mentions "MicroSATA Generation 2 interface". 2.5" SATA drivers are easy to find and not too costly, but the same thing cannot be said for MicroSATA hard drives.

However, this page:
http://support.lenovo.com/fr_FR/product ... MIGR-74566
... mentions "MicroSATA solid state drives" and "SATA hard disk drives". Moreover, my actual HDD only mentions SATA, not MicroSATA.

I'm not looking for an SSD (yet), so my question is: will a 2.5" SATA drive be OK, or do I really need to find a MicroSATA HDD for my Thinkpad T410?

Thanks for you help.

Welcome to the forum!

T410 will take a standard 2.5"/9.5mm SATA SSD or hard drive, no issues there.

Happy upgrading.

Yes, a SATA HDD will work fine. My T410 has a Hitachi HTS725032A9A364 in it from the factory and it is a SATA HDD.

As I read the specs you referenced, the T410's INTERFACE is MicroSATA Generation 2 compatible.

I also have a T410 and need a new hard drive. Will a hard drive with the following specifications work with a T410? I was hoping I could get a 1TB drive, even though the highest listed on the official Lenovo website is 500GB.

1TB Mobile Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 9.5 MM 2.5 Inch

And if the above doesn't work, would this one work?

500GB 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 32MB Cache 7 MM 2.5 Inch Performance Mobile Hard Disk Drive (WD5000LPLX)

thanks guys

Yes it will work fine. Lenovo just happens to list a max as 500GB but there is no cap. Can anyone confirm? Im 99% sure but still. Ive personally never used over 500gb in laptop.

Of course they'll work.
Lenovo just NEVER updates anything, if a newer/larger/better version comes on the market after they publish their info.
That's why some laptops (according to Lenovo and the lazy likes of Crucial and consorts) max out at 4/8/16 GB RAM, even though they could run with 8/16/32 GB respectively.
The 4/8/16 was the then maximum at the time of launching those machines.
The same goes for hard disks, SSDs etc.
Only difference: you MUST check the max. thickness of the disks (7 or 9.5 or 12 mm) that fit in your drive bay(s) together with the caddy and rails.

No matter how thick the T410 is, drive size matters! Only a 9.5mm HDD will fit.

Also, this won't fit, it just is a tad bit too high.

thanks guys. Does that mean only a 9.5mm will fit the T410? Or does that mean 9.5mm and lower? Sorry for the newb questions, but you guys have been very helpful

1. We can confirm from experience that T410 can handle a 1 TB 2.5"/7.0mm SSD (Samsung 850 Pro for its 10 year warranty).
So I would imagine that a 1 TB HDD would work on T410 also...

(Sorry for coming to the party so late!)

2. Our T410 was running off a 9.5mm thick SSD as of a few days ago, so this works also!
(Almost all 2.5" notebook SSD sold nowadays is 7.0 mm thick).
