T420s Self Motherboard Upgrade: Warranty Voided?

#1 Post by skinnersbane » Fri Aug 16, 2013 1:42 pm

I upgraded the motherboard on my T420s with one I purchased on Ebay. The new motherboard appears to be brand new, and has no UUID stored in the EEPROM. My computer has 1 year warranty left. Does replacing the motherboard void the warranty on the rest of the computer (really, I only care about the panel, as I have already had one replaced, which somehow got dirt INSIDE the screen). Thanks.

Theoretically, yes.

Whether the depot would pick up on the fact that you've swapped the board while fixing your LCD is a whole another matter.

I'm pretty sure they won't warranty a laptop when you have replaced the motherboard. Just install the old motherboard if you have any problems with the rest of the system.

Yes it does. And with reason to be honest. As long as you keep the notebook as it came from the factory, if it breaks, it's their fault. But as soon as you open it, they can't be sure if you're the one who broke it.

If you don't mind breaking the rules, keep the old motherboard around and swap it before sending it for service. Myself, I'd probably sell the old motherboard take my chances. If they refuse to service my machine, I'd simply fix it myself.
