SSD drive swap?

#1 Post by Olwe » Thu Oct 31, 2013 8:46 pm

I followed the advice in this post http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=109855 and outfitted my T61 with an SSD, which is working perfectly. Question: Can I yank it and put it in a used T410 (14") I'm getting? I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 on the T61, but I'm prepared to have to reinstall the OS.

Yes, physically the drive will fit. I guess you have a 2.5" SATA SSD Drive. I can't tell between a T61 and T410, but I've swapped drives with Ubuntu installs between T61 <=> T400, X61s <=> X200s and I never had any problems.

However, in all those cases the graphics were Intel in both donor and receiver machines. I don't know what will happen if you move an Nvidia to Intel or Nvidia to Switchable Intel/Optimus :??:

Hope this helps!

My prime concern was that the hardware, the drive itself and its caddy would be compatible/fit. If that's true, I'll worry about whether the OS works later. :)

Should continue to work just fine. Ubuntu is good at detecting hardware changes and installing the appropriate drivers.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

I'd expect it to work without changes, or automatically switch drivers on first boot. Windows on the other hand, prefers to BSOD!

I have swapped Windows 7 drives between X220s > T410s > T420 w/Nvidia before and never had any issues. Lenovo System Update works really well. For all the awful things Microsoft has done, Windows 7 was actually alright.

OK, then it's a case of YMMV.

Definitely! I've swap once a Win7 SSD from a X61s to a X200s without issues.

And then one day I upgraded another X200s of mine (that already had Win7) from 2x 2GB to 2x 4GB => BSOD :eek:
