New to Forum and T410 RAM question

#1 Post by gert » Sun Jan 19, 2014 6:53 pm

Hello All,

Just signed up to the forum. Long time Thinkpad user (T41p, T410, T420).

I got a T410 from Ebay with 4GB. Turns out the 4GB is 2GB on mainboard and 2GB in the expansion slot. Is it still possible to replace the 2GB module in the expansion slot with 4GB module to achieve 6GB in total?

Any compatibility list for 4GB ram modules?

Thanks,
Gert

T410 has DIMM slot on base of machine, and second DIMM slot under keyboard. Both are user accessible, both can take up to 4 GB each. Yes, I have 4 + 2 in my T410, any brand should be fine.

Welcome to the forum!

You can certainly remove the 2GB SODIMM and install a 4GB for 6GB total.

I believe there is still a slight benefit to using the same sized SODIMMs in both slots, but the performance increase can't possibly be noticeable.

Also, you can mix and match SODIMMs, PC3-8500, PC3-10600, PC3-12800 all seem to work fine.

Hi underclocker, hi rjwilmsi,

Thanks for the great information. For now I will replace the 2GB on the module in the back (as it is easier to access)

I found this nice video showing the removal of the keyboard which also shows the ram slot at the bottom plus the one underneath the keyboard.

I am going to leave the keyboard in place for now. I've had bad experience with these little plastic noses on a Dell. Unless you have practice, the first time you pop these some are prone to breaking leaving the keyboard not properly affixed anymore. (That's what happened on the Dell)

Thanks,
Gert

Download the maintenance manual from Lenovo's website for that particular laptop. It will have step by step instructions for removing and replacing everything. That's one of the benefits of buying into a Thinkpad, the support and documentation for these laptops is second to none.

6 GB of RAM will be plenty for most user. But if you want to this laptop will accommodate up to 8 GB of RAM as stated above.
