T410 Ram trouble

#1 Post by vo1ei » Wed Jan 22, 2014 9:29 pm

Hello All, First time posting but long time reading the posts and enjoy the conversations.

I have a T410 that i'd like to upgrade fro 2x2gb to 2x4gb , when i install both 4gb ram sticks the computer bios sees the memory but it freezes on the "windows is starting screen". With one 4gb stick in the computer it goes to the "windows is starting screen" and quickly goes to BSOD. With 1x4gb stick and 1x2gb stick the computer goes into the restart loop. This has my very puzzled and i hope someone might know what it could be.

I tried both sticks of 4gb together, separate and with combination of the existing 2gb sticks. I updated the BIOS when i first received the machine about 2 weeks ago.

the Ram i am trying to install is Kingston KVR13S9S8/4 the existing ram in the machine is MTBSJF25664HZ-1G4D1 both are PC3-10600.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Matt

Generally speaking, ThinkPads do not like "value RAM" offerings, and KVR stands for Kingston Value RAM.

Try another brand...Hynix, Samsung, Mushkin, Crucial...

Good luck.

Thats what i was thinking, what is really scary is the fact i paid the same price for the 2x4gb sticks locally as the cost of 2x4gb sticks from Crucial!

thanks for the help!

There is nothing wrong with Kingston ValueRAM and it works great and performs well in ThinkPads.

Your specific issue is likely tied to you choosing the 1 rank modules instead of the 2 rank modules (KVR1333D3S9/4G). The quickest way to tell is by how many chips on each side of the module 4 vs. 8.

I had similar problems with my T410 with the 4 Gig modules that I got from Crucial. So I returned the modules and left the machine at 4 Gig. I would like to upgrade the memory to 8 Gig, can you make a recommendation on what would work in the machine? Also, are you saying that 2 rank modules are the memory modules with 8 chips (4 on each side)?

Thank you,
John

My personal experience with KVR has been less-than-stellar on a plethora of ThinkPads...obviously, YMMV.

I bought my T410 new (2010) with a single 4GB SO-DIMM. It was a Samsung part number - M471B5273BH1-CF8

When I wanted to add another 4GB to the empty slot, I was lucky enough to find the exact same part number for sale on eBay. Both have run flawlessly for the past couple of years.

No, 2 Rank modules have a total of 16 chips, 8 per side.

For a T410, I would recommend any module that fits this criteria:
-DDR3-1066 MHz, 1333 MHz, or 1600MHz
-2 rank module, 8 chips per side, 16 total
-1.5 Volts and not 1.35 Volts
-has a lot of good reviews on sites like newegg or amazon

There are some examples:
Patriot PSD34G16002S
KVR1333D3S9/4G
G.SKILL F3-1333C9S-4GSL
Mushkin N82E16820226020 or N82E16820226026

My fingers are crossed! I would feel terrible if the Mushkin didn't work after giving you the recommendation.

Jayton4, thank you for your recommendations. I will choose one of your selections and see what happens. I will not hold you responsible if for some reason it does not work. It's all good my friend.

It freaking works! Finally! I am very happy right now!

Jayton4, you are the man!

Like I said in the previous post I ordered the Mushkin N82E16820226020 modules (2 of them) from Newegg.com. The Newegg item number is 20-226-020. The following was printed on the sticker of the RAM module:

Mushkin Essentials 991644
PC3-8500 SODIMM 7-7-7-20 1.5V

Again thank you Jayton4 for sharing the information that you posted! A few months ago I was so frustrated with the RAM modules from Crucial. I am not blaming them since I have purchased modules from them before and they have worked. I guess it's something in the design of the T410 that is can take only certain memory modules.

Thank you again! I am very grateful!

John

So wait, this is why I spent so long troubleshooting with my Corsair CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9 sticks?

here is a 10KB image with the symptoms:
Image
Computer: Thinkpad T510 4349CTR w/ latest BIOS
OEM 2x2GB: Samsung M471B5673EH1-CF8 DDR3-1066F / 533MHz.
Corsair 2x4GB: CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3-1600 / 800MHz (appears to have 533MHz profiles according to Taiphoon and CPU-Z)
Both support 1.5v

The corsair sticks together work fine as long as I am using a 32bit OS. :banghead:
So I guess I am buying new RAM, that is a shame because these corsair sticks were a wicked deal. :(

Corsair CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9 with portion of sticker peeled back:

Four hynix H5T04G83MFR per side, eight per stick.

So I guess even though the SPD chip is fine, it appears to not be usable.

I've also had what seems to be the same compatibility issue with 4 GB DIMMs in a ThinkPad T410:

Work fine alone or paired in T410:
  • 2 GB Laptop DDR3 RAM SK Hynix HMT325S6CFR8C-PB PC3-12800S 1600MHz 1Rx8 1.5V
  • 4 GB Laptop DDR3 RAM Integral IN3V4GNYBGI PC3-8500S 1066 MHz 1.5V (no longer have this but appears to be 2Rx8 from internet search)
  • 4 GB Laptop DDR3 RAM SK Hynix HMT351S6EFR8C-PB PC3-12800S 1600MHz 2Rx8 1.5V
Doesn't work in T410:
  • 4 GB Laptop DDR3 RAM SK Hynix HMT451S6MFR8C-PB PC3-12800S 1600 MHz 1Rx8
Booting with memtest86+ it crashes within a few seconds and covers most of the screen with horizontal bands of red, blue, green, then machine restarts itself. Sounds like the "colourful hang" that Oelmuvan reported.

Same 4 GB 1Rx8 module passes a full pass of memtest86+ with no problems in X220.

So in conclusion for 1Rx8 versus 2Rx8: does seem then that for 2 GB DIMMs in T410 doesn't matter, in X220 doesn't matter at 2 GB or 4 GB, but in T410 a 4 GB 1Rx8 doesn't work, a 4 GB 2Rx8 is fine.

I've used 8 GB DIMMs in X220 but were all 8 chips per side, so can't detail those.

I'd of course noticed that DDR3 RAM modules have 4 or 8 chips on each side but had never thought it mattered.

i hadnt seen these kinds of issues.

I beleive the 400 is much more susceptible but the 410/420 eats any kind of ram. I may have had KVR but its not aggressively marketed as Value.

The other value I've used is Corsair Value select and its also ok.

Good work class, now you'll know why nearly most of thinkpads that uses DDR3 4GB sticks works best as 16 chips per module (2 rank is not right, have to expressed as 2Rx8). DDR3 8GB modules are all 16 chips usually.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection
