T410 2x4GB issue

Hi guys

Purchased a second hand t410 there about 2 weeks ago, since then I have reformatted and installed linux mint. Anyway I had the system when I got it came with 1x2GB and 1x1Gb stick inside. So I went ahead an purchased 2 sticks of kingston 4GB 1Rx8 PC3L 12800s(second hand). I had done a little research on what frequency the t410 could take and it was 1033 but shouldn't have a real issue with 1600 as it would just under-clock it(I could be wrong)

Now I have tried both sticks in the laptop and all I get is a constant resetting after choosing from normal, safe or memory test(which fails). When I use one of the sticks only can get to the desktop for it to crash within a minute or so. When I have both sticks in my laptop I can see them in listed in the BIOS.

From looking at the kingston RAM and googling, I think it is running at 1.35v (PC3L) While the old RAM in the laptop is PC3 which runs at 1.50v. Would this be whats causing the issue I am having? Is there anyway of solving the issue or do I just have incompatible RAM? From doing more googling I see RAM models with 1.35v listed as compatible with my model thinkpad.

Any advice would be welcome and I would be very grateful.

Cheers
John

I suppose the short answer is that if they don't work in your T410, then they aren't compatible and you'll have to swap them.

Looking at http://superuser.com/questions/662033/c ... m-together though it maybe depends on whether the RAM sticks support dual voltage or not. I have a 4 GB Kingston ASU1600S11-4G-EDEG module (plus a different 2 GB) in my T410 working fine, I believe that's standard DDR3 RAM.

EDIT: see this similar thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=112899

Hi thanks for the reply, yea from looking at that thread I seem to be havign the same problem. I had a choice between kingston and Micron. So I might ask teh man for a swap on the sticks. I'll keep investigating as well.

Cheers

Hi bluejohn,

I just want to say that the modules that I purchased work! Here is the link to my post that I just entered.

Hi there bluejohn,
you from Castleton by any chance?
I visited 'Cambion Electronics' there, on a business trip way back in 1971.
The very pretty receptionist showed me the real Blue John...
Either way, welcome to the forum!
Erin go bragh!
