ThinkPad hangs on boot - ThinkPad screen & cursor alternate

I have a ThinkPad Windows 7, was working fine for months. Couple of days ago the browser (Chrome or IE) closed while browsing a site. Today when I started, it showed the ThinkPad screen for a few seconds, then the screen went black with a horizontal cursor (like _) flickered on the top-left corner of the screen for 3-4 seconds and went back to the ThinkPad screen and then again to the horizontal cursor flickering for 3-4 seconds and back to the ThinkPad screen.

When I press the blue ThinkVantage button, it gives me the option to enter BIOS setup, which I am able to enter and then the BIOS screen remains and I am able to browse through various options but not sure what I can do in BIOS setup to fix this issue.

I have -
a) removed the battery, pressed the power button for more than a minute, plugged in power adapter and tried starting without the battery plugged in but same issue
b) I checked for RAM and could see only 1 RAM so I think I cannot remove it
c) Visually inspected the USB ports and none seem to be damaged

Not sure how to remove the CMOS battery as was suggested in one forum. Any suggestions what I can do to fix it would be appreciated. Not even sure how to find out which model ThinkPad it is. Help.
