Performance Gain PCI-E Mini with Primary Drive already SSD?

#1 Post by nelson_chow » Fri Apr 11, 2014 7:07 am

HI everyone,

I have a T420S, and it says Enhanced Experience 2.0 RapidDrive on sticker on the machine.

I already runs an SSD drive.

Question: If I now add a PCI-E Mini Drive, and make it primary, would I achieve any performance gain?

(I read some posts on this forum, most threads concerns PCI-E SSD with Traditional Mechnical Drive, not PCI-E SSD with SSD Primary Drive, hence the question)

Best wishes, have a good weekend,
Nelson

The ThinkPad doesn't support mPCIe SSD, it supports mSATA, which operates at 3.0 Gbps
Current ThinkPad: T430u, T430s, X1 Carbon, X1, X230t, X220t, X230, X220, X201t, W520, W701ds, T500, T420 and many more

Ah, ok, so will there be a performance increase if I use a mSATA drive if my primary drive is already an SSD?

Generally, no. Maybe if your current SSD is slow/bad and you invest in a very high-end mSATA SSD, then yes. But the odds are low.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

I use the mSATA slot in my T420s for additional storage, not performance. As dr_st said, you would have to have a really old and crappy SSD for the mSATA to give a performance boost to.

The Crucial M500 and Samsung Evo lines are selling for very cheap right now. I may upgrade my 256GB mSATA to a 480GB soon, but the prices just keep falling.
