Hard Drives for Thinkpad 410s

Hi All. First post and question on the forum!

I have a Thinkpad T410S that came with 100G HD and Preloaded with Win 7 Prof.
I want to replace this with a new, higher capacity HD and to load a Linux Distro instead.

I'd like to know for the folks who have upgraded their drives which brands/models have worked for them? (SSD or SATA)?

Thanks!

Eugene

The T410s uses a standard 9.5mm drive. Any should work and the brand has little practical difference.. If you don't need a lot of space, I'd be inclined toward a SSD, which will be much faster, especially in Linux.

The T410s uses the 1.8" form factor. These were available in HDD or SSD configurations. Probably not as easy to find at this point. The largest capacity I have seen was 300Gb.

Lenovo offered SSD's by Toshiba and Samsung.

Thanks for fixing my screw up. Must have been looking at the wrong thing. I believe the 1.8" are on the expensive side. One in the Ultrabay might be worth a look.

There are plenty of 1,8" SSD's available, they are still being produced today. For example the Intel DC S3500, which is available with 800GB or the Intel DC S3700.

Older 1,8" SSD's that I can recommend are the Intel X18-M (very reliable) and the Crucial C300 1.8". (very fast) Other modern 1,8" SSD's include the Kingston SSDNow KC380 1,8", Kingston SSDNow V+ 180 1,8" and Crucial C400 1.8". (up to 512GB)

Alternatively you may also use a microSATA to mSATA adapter which allow you to use mSATA SSD's in your T410s.

Agreed

I've used the old Kingston SSDNow V+ 180 1.8" in mine. Not the fastest SSD by any standards but in real world usage I am really happy with the performance. I was also considering a OWC 1.8" as well. I don't know why everyone seems to favor the microsata adapter since 1.8 inch drives cost about the same.

No more 2.5" HDDS for the T410 series?? That's a bummer. :( When (& why) did they change to the 1.8" size??

Please READ what people are talking about!
Only the T410s needs 1.8" drives, all other T410 can use the 2.5" drives!

Well, this shows what I (don't) know.

But that doesn't mean you have to bite my head off.....

I supposed My T30s each outweigh three T410S models.

The absolute best option available is exactly what Aurora said, the mSATA to microSATA adapter. With a mSATA to microSATA adapter, you get the best performance (max out SATA II spec with today's mSATA drives), price (1.8 drive prices are ridiculous compared to drives like Crucial m500), selection, and availability.

I would tend to disagree with that. When I look up the 1.8" drives mentioned in this thread, the differences is huge. They are harder to find and much more expensive. Perhaps it is just different here in the U.S. I don't typically recommend Crucial drives in machines that run on SATA III spec, but for SATA II speeds, why not? The m500 and m550 in the 240GB and 480GB capacities are real bargains right now. The Samsung EVO mSATA drives are also priced very attractively right now.

cadillacmike68: It's cool man, nobody wants to bite your head off. It's just that folks on this board usually like to stay on topic.

I do not see the relevance of this statement. Are you asking about the weight or telling everyone? Perhaps you should start a new thread to find out more information on the weights?
