Re: looking at a t410
T410 are nice machines with nothing chronic like SB/Chipset issues of the T4x series or the Nvidia issue plaguing laptops of the T61 generation. Build and durability seems to me to be similar to the "classic" Thinkpad design than the T420. I myself prefer 4:3 screens, however given the choice of only widescreens, I'd prefer 16:10 vs 16:9 that are found in T420 and newer. For that reason alone I prefer my T400 or T410 over my T420.
Re: looking at a t410
Thats a good sign and ill be honest i went back a few pages and saw nothing recurring enough to have me even slightly worried. Would i be correct in thinking the bios has a whitelist so only lenovo modules will work? And is there a modded bios available to remove said whitelist

There is a whitelist, yes, and there is a modded bios.

The X301/T400/T410 were nice machines except that they had some of the worst screens ever put on a laptop in terms of black value, contrast, and viewing angles.

+1
[Edited: 16:10, my bad!]
I upgraded to a T410 (16:10 aspect ratio) also with SSD, from a previous T42 (4:3 aspect ratio as you know).
The T410 was the last "T" generation to have this 16:10 aspect ratio.
The T410 comes with Win7 which arguable is still better than Win 8.1 from many users.
T410 is thicker, but it's got four (4) USB 2.0 ports among other benefits!

Re: looking at a t410
Apart from the fans that have been known to go out often, there was really not much wrong with T410.
As for the LCDs...heh...until the most recent batch (T440 series in FHD guise), none of the 14" ThinkPads had screens that were anything to write home about...

T410 screens have a ratio of 16:10 (not 12:10).

Re: looking at a t410
I've never tried the T410 but the 1440x900 screen in my T410s is pretty good (for a thinkpad
). I used to have an R500 with the 1280x768 and thought it was a massive upgrade when I got the 410.
It's an average screen I would say, but others are absolute garbage.
I'M DONE WITH THINKPADS, JUST DONE!!!
Re: looking at a t410
I have had a T410 for 4 years and loved it, I recently upgraded to a W530 (do lots of VM work, needed lots of memory) and the T410 was awesome. It has more features than I ever used (eSata, FireWire) and I tried to upgrade memory to 16 GB but it wouldn't even POST with a 1x8 GB SODIMM. I am now using it as a server with Win 2008 R2 for file and fax services.
