T410 - W7 64 bit will not install -

Hello all,

I need some assistance with my T410. I got a new hard drive to be recognized in BIOS (the original new one was intermittent) but now W7 64 bit will not install. It starts loading and then BSOD. The 32 bit version installs fine. I have used these disks before on Thinkpad's and HP laptops and they worked. I have tried two disks, a USB copy and now am trying a digital river version. I think I must be missing something, a BIOS setting or ?

Thanks for any input.

Bruce

Is there a stop error?

If so what is the error code?

The unit was bought from a Forum member who said W7 64 bit was installed. It has a new hard drive and a new Crucial 4GB memory stick
Any assistance is appreciated.

Test the RAM with memtest86 bootable CD and report back.

Thanks George, I downloaded Memtest86 v4.3.6 and am running now. So far so good. Let you know.

Thanks again,

1 pass no errors, about an hour of run time. I am just letting it run.

There is just one 4GB stick of memory. I think I might move the 4GB stick into the slot under the keyboard, who knows??

What is the source of your install media?

I have used several sources. The first is CD recovery.com supposedly original Lenovo disks ( these have worked in the past on other machines), then I downloaded iso's from Digital River, http://forums.mydigitallife.info/thread ... load-Links

I think I have also downloaded iso's from Microsoft.

Give that a shot.

I've seen stranger things resolve seemingly unresolvable issues.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Tried moving the 4GB stick around, no luck... tempted to purchase a 2GB stick to try.

Thanks for the support!

I was going to purchase a 2GB stick and checked the memory model again. When you run the Curcial memory selector it comes up with PC3-12800. The Lenovo data sheet calls up PC3-8500. See...

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-75387

I have PC3-10600 installed. I wonder if I need to have a PC-8500 stick? Could this be causing me grief?

Thanks,

Bruce

What I find puzzling is that the 32-bit version installs fine.

That fact is what's throwing me off, big time.

Let me check if I have some small DIMMs of PC3-8500 RAM and I'll drop you a PM later on.

Thanks to George I got to test my guess the problem was due to RAM speed. He sent me a couple of 1GB sticks of PC3 8500 gratis. I had a 4 GB PC3 10600 stick installed during this issue. I installed the 1GB sticks and W7 64 bit installed just fine using the same sources as before.

I will purchase a new 4GB PC3 8500 stick to replace the 4GB PC3 10600.

I received the new 4GB PC3 8500 stick, installed and all is well. The machine is running W7 64 bit Pro fine with 5GB of RAM, a 4GB stick and 1GB stick.

Based on my experience and the Lenovo spec sheet I would suggest using PC3 8500 RAM with a T410.

5GB, eh? That's an odd amount of RAM but should work fine.

Are you planning on adding another 4GB?

My T410 is rocking 8GB and it's really nice.

I had two 1GB stick's George gave me for a test and left one of them installed thus a total of 5 GB . I agree going to 8 GB would be nice.

Hi all, I am new here.
I just got Lenovo T410 refurbished and enjoy it very much.
Speaking about RAM, I have installed 1 x 2 GB PC3 8500 and 1 x 4 GB Micron DDR3 PC3-12800S 1600MHz, it is working great no problems at all.
Initially the laptop came with only 2 GB but I had one of 4 GB spare, fitted and working fine.

Would using a stick of the correct frequency memory cause the other to slow down? I thought with dual channel memory had to run at the same speed. So the system would probably default to the lower of the two if I remember correctly.

But yes, 2x 4GB ram makes it run VMs like a dream. Should be able to get some online for less than $100 shipped, and it really helps with Win 7 X64.

If you put in more than one RAM-module, their combined speed will always be limited to the slowest one.
Regardless of possible RAM-module speed: the PC/laptop is also limited to the max. speed that its memory controller is capable of.

That's what I assumed. BTW -- I am running 2x Corsair PC3-10700 and the laptop automatically down rates it to PC 8500 with no issues. I was able to install Windows 7 Pro x64. I wonder if there are different BIOS revisions that have problems with this?

Tried version 1.44, 1.45 standard BIOS and 1.45 modded BIOS. I was also having problems with recognizing a WD Scorpio Black hard drive at the same time so not sure I tried the faster RAM with 1.44 but it did not work with 1.45 modded BIOS.
