Esata port on T410s

I have bought the correct cable from Esata port to 22 pin connector to 2.5 hard drive. The 2.5 hard drive is powered up but the hard drive is not detected in windows 7. The external laptop drive is functional as it is detected by a usb dock via windows. I did notice a gap between the cable and the esata port. Anyone knows why it is not detected? Thanks

Starting with the basics, the esata to SATA cable you have also has a USB cable out of it, and you've plugged this in as well as the esata? T410 esata is not powered, requires power from secondary USB.

my cable does not have a usb connector. When i plug this cable into the esatap usb combo port the laptop hard drive powers up but is not detected by windows 7

OK, that's the problem then. For example I have the Akasa AK-CBSA03-80BK adapter for use with my T410, eSATA plus USB for power.

I have another question. Without that USB connector there is power supplied to the laptop hard drive as it is vibrating but there is no data being sent through the port to identify the drive. Is this because there is not enough power and requires the additional power from the USB port? Thanks for replying back.

You might find it more convenient all around to place the drive in a 2nd HDD adapter (see below) rather than connecting it via the eSATA port:

As I understand it there is eSATA and eSATAp, the second being data+power on the same connection. The T410 only has the first, so requires power via another source e.g. USB. It must be that the eSATA connection always supplies a little bit of power, but not enough to properly use a 2.5" drive.

There are multiple ways to connect a 2.5" drive to a T410. In my T410 I already use the primary SATA, UltraBay as second SATA (as other forum user suggested), and as the USB ports are only USB 2.0 I use the eSATA port to have a third hard drive at SATA 3 GB/s speeds. As all my disks are SSDs and I want mulitple disks to have backups/redundancy I prefer this to buying larger disks.

Thanks for your response. On the T410s it is eSatap and there is power already. Not sure why there is no data recognition of the drive. Using the Ultrabay as second SATA would be a more cost effective alternative and achieve the same copying results.

I have never tried it with an eSATAp cable. I have used a separate power adapter for drive power, and then an eSATA > SATA cable for the data on many occasions and it has worked perfectly with 2.5" and 3.5" drives. I got the drive power adapter out of a USB kit called Vantec CB-ISATAU2.

I have an Esatap cable and it is powering up the 2.5" drive but the operating system Windows 7 is not detecting the drive.

I tried out your suggestion and to no avail. It appears the esata data port is not working on the laptop. I have verified your method with a desktop and it works. This also means the Esatap cable is fully functional. The USB component of this combo port is still functional though. If I want to copy I should buy a Ultrabay HDD adapter. I have finally figured it out! The esata port in Bios was not enabled. I enabled it and now it works. It was through the Bios in IO Ports.
